What Qantas routes will be cut?
I found this in the SMH http://business.smh.com.au/business/...1125-6hfr.html and within it, it states that
The airline said the global economic downturn had mainly affected its international mainline operations, and domestic operations were holding up. In response it will reduce flights on under-performing long-haul routes such as services to Asia and Hawaii. Is there a chance LHR and/or LAX will be reduced...as this is where the crisis has hit the most? For example...back to 3 daily flights into LHR? I notice Emirates, despite massive drops in its profitability, is persisting with its expansion into Australia...interesting times ahead |
I didn't see it in that article but saw on Bloomberg that QF is hedged at around US$106 for the next year's worth of fuel purchases, which wouldn't help competitiveness vs (any?) other unhedged airlines.
Whoever signed off on that was a hero at $150 per bbl, but is now a zero at $50. James |
LHR will be cut but there's no list as of yet.

Probobly not a bad idea given the dire state of the UK economy but I thought they lost their heathrow slots if they dont actively use them. Maybe even in this current climate another airline may want to "lease" the slots for a while. |
I reckon some more LAX services, perhaps AKL-LAX will go daily 332 as the last 332 rto arrive hasnt been loaded into sheds yet and it looks like the current 332 hasn't been takern off the route yet.
From the stats here <http://www.bitre.gov.au/info.aspx?ResourceId=211&NodeId=103> JQ seem to have higher loads on HNL than Hawaiian and gthe route seems to do well for them. I reckon some China services may be cut ie MEL-PVG and perhaps a frequency on PVG/PEK. More trans tasman will probably go JQ |

Why would they cut the flagship route? I would perhaps see a drawdown in frequencies but a cut, no way.

Is this just a hunch or have they made noises that LHR will be cut?
Qantas would reduce capacity by cutting the frequency of flights to Los Angles, London, Honolulu and Asian destinations such as Hong Kong. http://www.theaustralian.news.com.au...19-643,00.html |
The Herald Sun (http://www.news.com.au/heraldsun/sto...20-664,00.html) also stated routes to Britain, United States and Hong Kong. I would assume that there was a press conference yesterday where these questions came up.

"... as well as cancelling the lease of two new A330-200 aircraft which were to be handed to Jetstar. "
Interesting ... Anyhoo - I suspect the Airbus MEL/HKG flights may be under the gun amongst others. |
Apparently Qantas mainline will increase services to Japan due to the favourable exchange rate (well....not so favourable for me!!!). Suprisingly, BA has downgraded one of its daily HKG flights to a B777 with No F. Perhaps QF may be cutting QF 29/30 by a few frequencies per week?
|
Given how much QF paid for, and the effort involved in acquiring, their LHR slots, I'd be very surprised if LHR frequencies drop by much. OTOH maybe QF will reinstate their LHR-MAN ghost flight to protect the slots?

Some changes have already happened nd published:
*QF149/008 SYD-LAX-SYD will dissapear from the new year. Leaving SYD-LAX-SYD 2x daily only. *JQ cuts SYD-HNL-SYD from 5 to 3 per week. *Rumour MEL-PVG vv will be cut. And I reakon the 3x weekly A333 QF85/86 MEL-HKG vv will be cut to make way for increased NRT services. Apart from those I dont see many more major changes. Thanks |
Where is the JQ info pubished? I still see 4 flights per week to HNL in March on their site?
Any reduciton in QF flights? I woudl have thought it cheaper to fly a JQ 332 than a QF 767.... |
The question of increased frequency to/from NRT is, would Japanese traffic to Australia increase mainly because of the strong Yen? I somehow doubt it... somehow...
