QF81 Upgrading to Business Class (SYD-ADL)
I've been looking forward to trying out the Skybed for a while now and am heading to Adelaide later this year. QF81 appears to be equipped with the Skybed and there are redemption seats available in Economy but not Business.
My understanding is if there are no Business redemption seats (Classic Award) there is also no upgrade inventory. Is this correct, or does a different rule apply for domestic legs of international flights?

Your understanding is correct in relation to domestic flights (QF400+); I'm not sure how this works with domestic segments of international flights.

So if there is no business redemption inventory on a particular domestic flight, but available business seats at check-in for that flight, will Qantas give ODU's from Y to J? Or will they let the seats go free?

ODU's are different and I have very little experience with them as I rarely use them; others may know more ...
(If I want to upgrade domestically, I'll ensure a J award seat is available on a suitable domestic flight, book in economy on an upgradeable fare (Saver/Flexi ..) and upgrade immediately it is ticketed.)

On this particular flight, one thing I've noticed when trying to book awards to SIN from NZ that there is no award availability for the ADL-SYD leg or vv. !@#$ annoying considering it means having to do the terminal shuffle at SYD needlessly, plus clear immigration twice.
