Qantas Airways' latest web-only special of $498 roundtrip created quite a stir in our offices. To get this fare:

You must depart from Los Angeles only

Fare is good on select dates only:
- L.A. to Auckland: Sept 19, 21; Oct 19, 26, 29, 31; Nov 2, 5, 9, 12 2003
- Auckland to L.A.: Sept 28; Oct 3, 5, 10, 12, 17, 19, 24, 26, 29, 31; and Nov 2, 5, 7, 9, 12, 14, 16, 19, 21, 26, 2003.

You must book by September 24!

Booked in 'N' class - 70% miles on AA. Just FYI.

DJ (yes Pacific Blue will use the DJ airline code) is offering NZ$99 from CHC to BNE, for sale until 28 Sep 03. Flights DJ008 and DJ007.

QF has (according to electronic media last night) matched this fare.

well, I just grabbed one of these flights. . .12.5 hours in coach, but I have ALWAYS wanted to visit New Zealand and figure that this is a GREAT (cheap!) way of doing it. I am soooo utterly excited it's not even funny (OK, so I'm not your typical jaded flyer. . .I'll admit it!).

Of course, I better make sure I get my rx for ambien renewed way before then! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

These are non-upgradeable per the customer service person I spoke with.

And really - $500 RT to New Zealand. . how can you have any expectation that they would be upgradeable?! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/rolleyes.gif Take your ambien with you and a DVD player http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif

If they are in N class on a QF code on QF metal, and you wish to use QF points or QF u/c's I don't see why they wouldn't be upgradeable.

That person is wrong. If it's a QF issued ticket, on a QF aircraft, with a QF flight #, it's upgradable with QF miles or QF upgrade credits.

What about if it's written into the fare T&C's?? (not that I have checked and it would be the first time I've ever heard of it happening). But even N and O fares are upgradeable (and yuo can get op up's too!), so anything is possible.

It's an "N" class fare. Go to the link in the first post, then follow its link to the QF USA site.

It's upgradable - but only in theory! You need a U seat to upgrade to first... http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

Thanks for the info - I am only searching for a J seat using this paid ticket and then upgrading...so now the real question:

I zeroed out my account at QF with a Concorde ticket...so with 25K in BA miles and 250+K in AA miles...how can I upgrade this? Ideas?

How do you get upgrade certificates for QF? Thanks

willyroo Sep 22, 2003 1:09 am

You'll need QF miles or upgrade credits - there's no such thing (anymore) as QF certificates. Miles and UGs can't be transferred, but they can be used by a family member. So if you've got someone close with QF miles or UCs...

To get AA miles into QF, you may need to wash them through Starwood. With BA, Diners may be an option?

You'll almost certainly have to waitlist for an upgrade on this route. And to waitlist, you need a paid, issued ticket.

And remember that once the points have been transfered into QF Points, there is no way to get them back out and into other programs like BA, AA, Diners, Starwood etc. So it is going to be a risk. You need the points there and the paid ticket, and you join the waitlist, which is serviced based upon status. And you are competing for the U seats with many high status QF FF members on these high-demand routes.

However, the position in the upgrade waitlist is not dependent upon the fare paid, so even these cheap fares have the same chance of upgrade success as any other paid fare. Good luck.
