This is starting to look like a great thread for first time visitors to Oz, which I will be in April. Please keep the tips coming.

The 742 will have the old QF international seats. This indicates you must be flying very soon as the last of the QF 742's will be taken out of service soon. It is going on a one-way trip to Longreach. Two others remain in service oin lease to Air Pacific, so maybe they are returning to QF service??? Business class is the first two sections on the lower deck. Seating in rows 1-5 is generally preferred, but the seats are all the same. </font>
Does anyone know how soon is "soon"? I'm curious because I'm booked in Business aboard QF#518 from PER to SYD on July 24, 2003, and the airline's website indicates I'll be flying aboard a 742.

Some things have changed in regard to the original advice given to the OP, and some incorrect advice was also given.

Your T2 to T3 connection at SYD is illegal and under minimum connect time. The requirement is for 45 minutes, (until the connector walkway is built), as you currently have to detour via the railway station and it's connectors to the two terminals. The other option is a walk through the car park, where at least you can get your smoke in while doing so !! While it is in theory certainly "do-able" in 35 minutes, you would need everything going your way from arrival at gate at T3 to boarding at T2, and be prepared to walk/jog very briskly. As it is not an "airside" transfer, you will need to re-clear security at T2 as well and these days with VerminSpew in the same terminal, that can add a good 10 minutes alone if you get there at the wrong time. It's not too clear in the original post (that I could see, but it is morning after all!!!) but if it is the 742 service you are getting from SYD to CNS, then the gate staff aim for a -5 to -10 aerobridge closure on this flight, further cutting your connection time.

The 742 in QF service has had it's plans changed. It will now remain in service till October 2003 under current scheduling forecasts. Remains to be seen if it's sister ship, currently leased to AirPac, will return to duty when they take delivery of their 744's or be retired.

Smoking rooms are available at Sydney International - one on C concourse near gate 53 and one near gate 38 on A/B concourse, although that reminds me I haven't really "seen" that one lately. (Thought this might help your plans on the way home.) Domestically, it's join the masses on the sidewalks.

Cheers/Regards.
