Quantas Credit Card
Are there any quantas credit cards out there that give a nice sign on bonus for US residents? Would love to do this and get that concord award with less SPG points!

There are zero QUANTAS credit cards http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/tongue.gif

Ok V60t, Aussies tend to take offense when our national airline gets misspelt. How would you like to hear that American Airlines is Yank Airlines? Just skip the 'u' after "Q" next time, ok? http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif
As far as your question goes then the best thing there is is Qantas/Telstra VISA card which gives you 4 FF points per US$1.00 spent (conditions apply). Enjoy it while you can! |
Sorry about that spelling.....i've actually never been down under!
Can anyone tell me about the Qantas/Telstra VISA card which gives you 4 FF points per US$1.00 spent? At this rate, I would only need to charge 11K to get a free first class ticket on AA from bos-sjc! |

Too bad!
4 points to one dollar is a heck of a deal~! |
And who is going to ask for residency when you fill out the application on the web? Just use a friend's address or a mailing address in Australia. ANZ loves to give these cards out. You need to pick the card up in Oz though and for this you need 100 points of ID which can get pretty tricky but not impossible. Passport is worth 70 points, local bank account 25 points etc.

I really don't think you can get a QuANTAS (sic) credit card.
1) ANZ will run a credit check. If they can't find out anything that will look very odd. 2) You have to list your employer or accountant. With a US address, this may look just a little strange. 3) You may have to show proof of income. May be a little odd that he gets paid into his Boston bank account, and in US$. 4) ANZ do give these cards out pretty freely, but as a financial institution they are legally required to be a little careful. Giving a card to a guy who has nothing to do with Australia and who is providing false details? Unlikely. PS: Can you imagine the type of stories A Current Affair and the Sunday papers would run if someone managed to succeed with this scam. How good are they with credit checks. I read a story in the Sunday Papers where one of our failed Telephone companies One-Tel was giving mobile phone accounts to such people as Yogi Bear and Fred Flintstone and they weren't checking up on them as they were getting Aus $120 for each customer they signed up.

Last time I looked, the foreign exchange fee on ANZ's non-reward cards was 0.5%, so they are giving with one hand and taking with the other. |
Australian credit checks are a joke! They don't ask for a SSN or anything like that. For employer you can use a secretarial service since they never expect anyone to return their call. ANZ QF VISA is 99,5% set thing. Take it from someone who is an expert with Aussie banks. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif As long as someone acknowledeges that you work for company "X" on a certain phone number then you are pretty much guaranteed to get the card. More than often they don't even check the biz phone #. Enjoy your new ANZ card!

Couple of points;
Re Credit Card. If you get a Starwood Credit Card in the US (see http://www66.americanexpress.com/car...5080840888/0/n ) and earn 1 starpoint per $US. 1 Starpoint converts to 2 QF miles, so in the end you are earning 2 QF miles per $US without having to worry about the tax implications etc, or the fact that in the eyes of the law you are committing fraud. You also won't have the hastle of having to pick your card up at a bank branch in Australia. Re: One.Tel I have worked for One.Tel as well as Telstra in past roles and both do/did the same credit checks, unfortunately there are a lot of people (in dealerships especially) willing to break the rules and the law for a quick buck... I have seen several dealers be hauled off by the police for this sort of thing though..... Re; Credit checks Credit checks in Australia hook to your drivers licence number pretty much so if you don't have a verifiable Australian drivers licence, can't produce a Tax file number (our version of SSN's), and aren't paying any taxes in Australia don't be suprised if your card gets cancelled. If you get caught it would be considered fraud and you are likely to loose not just your card but also your Qantas account points (and I am not sure how that would flag in OneWorlds computers)... and if the authorities want to really play hardball there are economic extradition treaties between the States and Australia.... and of course you would never get an entry visa to Australia again.... is it all worth the risk (not to mention the hastle?) |
