Qantas and Australian Airlines

Just curious about whether Qantas and Australian Airlines wer partners prior to all coming under the Qantas name. Did they have a commercial alliance, and therefore share frequent flyer benefits or were they completely separate airlines with no commercial affiliation?

They were quite unrelated, beyond both being owned by the Commonwealth government.

For many years Ansett were QF's domestic partner, not Australian Airlines. QF and Australian were somewhat reluctant partners, but James Strong who had been Austalian airlines flambuoyant CEO was a major mover, so I am told. Koala

I don't think either Qantas or Australian Airlines had FF programs before the merger. I remember there was a "Flight Deck Club" (equivalent of current Qantas Club) - but no FF program.

There most definitely WAS a frequent flyer program in operation for TN prior to the merger. I remember receiving literature about it late 1991.

Thadoc - agree. Both QF and TN had FF programs, my points were merged and I was curious to see that the Australian Airlines ff # was used, not the QF one. Koala

"up, up, and away ... with TAA ... the Friendly, Friendly way !"

Or the line from a Redgum song, defining TAA and Ansett :

TAA - Try Another Airline !
Ansett - the reason you were trying another airline in the first place !
