A330-200 Vs 747-400

Just noticed that my flight 25 in March comes up on the website as an A330-200. I originally had upperdeck 747 seats for that flight.

I just wondered how does the A330 compare? (I have never been on one) I noticed that the planes were boasting AVOD, silent cabins, mood lighting and skybeds. That sounds ok I suppose. Would you be happy with this change, or have I just signed on to a 767ish experiance from Melbourne to LA? With the AKL stop it is a long flight to feel cramped.

I didn't think an A330-200 could even fly that far. That said, it is a very nice experience in J. Quieter than a 747 and 2x2x2 layout.

The Skybeds on the airbuses (except 380) are smaller thant he 744. I personally like the ud 744 much more than the 333.

From AKL-LAX it should be able to make it, however whatabout ETOPS requirements?

If NZ can do it with their 777's I presume TOPS is not an issue for QF and their 332's either.

THe QF group already fly 330's/767's to HNL

I think the bed itself is identical in length. It's just the other features of the bed which are slightly smaller I believe which are different (think arm rests, storage etc). That said, I have not graced J in a A330 since not long after their introduction and almost all the routes I fly QF offer the 744. That said, my favourite feature is that the A330 is very quiet.

There is v minor differences between the skybeds on 330s and on the 747s ; whether it is a 747 or 330 should make no difference to the journey or the cabin

Good information.. thanks.. I guess from what most are saying the A330-200 should be fine. I guess I will not stress on it.

Agreed

The arm rest is slightly narrower which IIRC narrows the storage pocket. The 332 will be a brand new aircraft - and it will be quieter than a 744.

Further, the 332 has a "split" J cabin which is likely to make it more intimate.

Enjoy the hop!

The lower deck on the 744 has a fair bit of air con noise and general wind noise that enters the cabin. The 332 / 333 seem far quieter in all zones than the 744 (including the UD area). I'd go for the 332 if noise is a big issue. I do like the ambience of the 744 UD, however, and if you exit this aircraft through door 2L, it is a faster sprint to immigration.

I'm doing a trip to Australia next month, and my return is Christchurch-Auckland-LAX-DFW. From AKL to LAX shows the A330-200. I'm sure it's not a problem, but the #'s don't add up.... The distance from AKL to LAX is over 2,000 kilometers from the max range of the A330. What am I missing?

Thanks in advance...

Nope... The A330-200 is actually quite a capable aircraft.

Max range with full payload is 12,500kms, so think of an A330-200 as a small 777 (and most importantly quieter).

http://www.airbus.com/en/aircraftfam...fications.html

AKL-LAX according to Great Circle Mapper = 10,467km

I guess you were looking at the data for the A330-200 on the Qantas web site. This is incorrect; as posted by Traveloguy, the range is actually 12,500km.

i've had the pleasure of flying in the j cabin on a 333 - like everyone else says, noticeably quieter than a 744. very nice if it's an overnight flight.
