Perhaps he only had silver in the first place!

Back to the topic at hand though... Will be interesting to see whether the 4 segment rule enforced as for the first time in over a couple of decades I might only make 3 QF segments within a calendar year.

I was on the phone to QF the other day discussing why an AKL-SYD LAN business class flight back in February had not credited to my QFF account.

I mentioned that I need the SC's as I am getting close to Platinum. The person on the phone said to make sure that I got 1400 SC's including 4 segments on QF.

It would be interesting to see whether they do indeed enforce the 4 QF segments.

Maybe QF have decided to enforce this rule where previously they had not.

Compared to flying QF in Australia, it's much less expensive to garner enough SC's for QF SG in the US when flying AA.

I had better nail lifetime Gold in this case as I appear to be plodding transatlantic all the time at the moment on AA and not much sight of a trip down under. I do not really fancy a double out and back LHR-HKG status run at the end of the year in Y. Hell, I will do the rest of the Plat card, and probably partner gold in Y as it is.

If QF moves to enforce this I hope they include all the related airlines - jetconnect, jetstar (even if non mileage earning - same as Air NZ does for their annual requirement of 1 paid flight to avoid annual member fee), QF Link, etc.

From the T&C's.
19.1.5 The travel required in each Membership Year to attain or retain Silver, Gold or Platinum status level must include a minimum of four Segments on Qantas or QantasLink.
I'm sure that if Qantas are going to start enforcing this rule, that these T&C's will need to be altered so that flights on Jetconnect and Australian Airlines would qualify.

I was not so sure about jet however, so I rechecked a copy the email referred to in the OP:
An important note about Status credits

To attain or keep your Silver, Gold or Platinum membership, you need to earn the required number of Status credits plus, you also need to fly at least 4 eligible flights segments on Qantas, QantasLink or Jetstar during your membership year
I think that bit about Jet is new, maybe that's part of the reason for the issue to be raised in the newsletters.

The newsletter only seems to make it to members with an australian address. I never received them in the UK, but as soon as I moved back to Sydney I was receiving them again.

Hopefully will also include QF codeshares if they do plan to enforce it.

I do receive QF newsletters sometimes (most times?).

Now I'm wondering what is in the newsletter they don't want kiwis to know?

Won't that defeat the purpose of introducing a 4 QF segment rule?

No. QF gets revenue from the codeshares.

'Eligible flights' are a defined term in the T&Cs - for what I can make out it does include all (but not free/award/agent etc etc) Qantas flights with 'QF' - so that should include code-shares.

Regards

LME etc etc
