Must be charter, although strangely the flights seem bookable via the QF website. That said, you would expect MEL-FCO over SYD-FCO.

I think they may have something to do with the Catholics World Youth Day in Sydney.

Available for Economy Award Bookings too...

Could do this routing for 56,000 points (Zone 9 Award):

FCO-SIN-DRW-CNS-TSV

And you'd get long day transits in SIN and CNS too.

I doubt it's for World Youth Day - that's July 15 to 20 and these flights are after that...

Timetable also shows QF16 operating on Sat 05, Tue 08 and Sat 12 so it could well be for World Youth Day.

A 74 full of catholics holding hands and offering a prayer as the meal carts come out would be an interesting if not eerie sight.

Could it be QF testing customer response to these flights and if successful provide a regular, or at least seasonal service, to Rome?

Hmmm, perhaps revisiting the route ...

Late last century, QF15/QF16 were regular SYD-MEL-BKK-FCO (+v.v.) scheduled flights. I often flew the afternoon SYD-MEL segment of QF15.

Thanks for the tip VH-EAB. Do you know if you use FF points for a Y seat could you allocate Zone A for a QFF Gold?

Cheers

it's pricing up at $2731. this is for a 743 via SIN.
for an extra $5 you can go via HKG on the CX 744 service (QF to HKG).

QF pro - dreamtime seats if you get them
QF con - 743
CX pro - 744, hang out in wing/pier, 5 more SCs
CX con - no points bonus, def seated in economy

point is, apart from dreamtime possibility, this is no special deal, it is standard pricing.
