Things to do on a flight to Australia?

Im off from JFK to SYD next week, via LAX on AA/Quantas... such a long flight. What do you recommend I do??? I HOPE AA/Quantas has dc powered seats as AA does on domestic flights... im flying coach :( .. There were no award travel available for business or first.

If you are relying on DC power ports, I would call Qantas and ask. I am sure that they can also describe or send you to a web page that describes the in flight amenities like power supply, in flight entertainment and the like.

In the 80's and 90's I did a lot of travel from SFO to SYD and Perth. Long is right, mate! Then there were no power ports in business as I remember. Certainly in coach I took an extra fully charged battery for my computer. Lots of CDs. No DVDs in those days.

Two other suggestions: books and sleeping pills!

Enjoy your time on that fabulous continent!

Ambien is your friend.

another good friend(s) are:

First suites and Skybed seats both feature AC power in every seat. Economy class does not have any power ports.

and

PC Power Outlets

PC power is available in First and Business on all international B747-400 and A330-300 aircraft. This system provides 110V AC (60 Hz) power and accepts most household power plugs including: Australian 2 or 3 pin, European 2 pin, Japanese 2 or 3 pin and USA 2 or 3 pin. Customers using UK 2 or 3 pin plugs need to use an adaptor.

OTOH, QANTAS has great AVOD system on these flights so you probably won't even need power plugs:

* peoplewatch - people are funny
* drink
* iPod - load it with an audiobook or two, in addition to music. It passes more time than music and gives your eyes a break
* long book that you've read before and love. Pickwick Papers is my standby.
* drink more
* sleeping pill of your choice, earplugs and eyemask
* DVD player if possible with movie selection and, of course, South Park
* Sudoku

Yeah it's long, but people do it every day. Be patient, you'll survive.

I think the current patch is working wonders. I can't actually recall the last time I did a seat reset.

I did LAX to Aukland a few mos ago on Qantas - Prescription sleeping pills and Bose headphones are what saved me. Try to get an aisle seat so you're not trapped w/2 people between you and the bathroom.

I'll be doing similar...

NYC-MEL via LAX and ORD. No stranger to long flights. Issue for me is going to be staying awake on the day flights HPN-ORD-LAX so I can sleep LAX-AKL-MEL and fight most of the jet lag since I land at MEL at ~8AM on Friday.

Suggestions:
AVOD: as others have mentioned, Qantas' is fairly good. Nothing wow but good variety.
Books, if you like reading
Sleep

Ah excellent - those 2 $50 DF vouchers we got 2 weeks ago on QF010 must have been an anomaly :)

AVOD is pretty bullet-proof on the A330s (which the OP isn't on) and now quite reliable on the 744s. AVOD has Sudoku IIRC...

The most obvious recommendation is to not sleep on the trans-continental leg. By the time you take off from LAX, (assuming it's one of the late night departures) and combined with your NYC time-clock you will be very tired and probably manage a good few hours of sleep once they feed you and turn down the lights.

Lonely Flyer Aug 2, 2007 12:49 am

You can have half bottles of nice Australian Red wine with your dinner served not too long after leaving LAX. Try 4, 5 or 6 bottles and you will be awake only in time for breakfast.

If you can give me the dates of your flight I can see if Lisa Robertson is operating......

However just in case she isn't working - the AVOD should keep you busy.
Before you travel visit here:

and avoid watching these movies so you can watch them on the plane.
