Padding
 

I was flying on a 767-300 last year and in the old economy seats. IMO they are much more comfortable than the new hard seats.

What is up with airlines and the elimination of padding in seats? BA Club Europe seats are the last bastion of padding I have found. Of course there is a weight saving but a little bit of foam makes a difference. My desk chair here at work has more padding than a Qantas economy seat.


(This has happened on the MET train system in Melbourne where they replaced the comfy seats with anti-graffiti seats which are uncomfortable. I don't see many aimless youth wandering around Qantas Jumbos with Stanley knives though.)

Harder foams promote better circulation and is generally more comfortable to sit on of course YMMV. If you notice cheap furniture uses soft foam whereas expensive uses hard foam, one will make you a**e fall asleep the other wont etc etc. I doubt its to do with a weight reduction more probable a space reduction.

Taking the club europe ba seats as an example. The foam is hard where around the rear and back. On the sides it is soft and where the head is there is a nice soft pillow thing. So no sore arse but the sides and head are supported.


The old Qantas economy seats were much more padded and in my experience there was no sore ar5e. The new ones are rather hard.

Can I buy you a drink Melbournian to put you in a better space - a fluffy duck perhaps, lots of foam there.:)

You can't beat a firm seat - whenever I sit in a non-German car I can't believe the softcock tosh that passes for seat padding.

I reckon they should rip all the foam out and replace it with solid timber seating. Maybe that Calvinist blood runs a bit too thick in my veins....

Ha ha ha. I had the mispleasure of driving a Toyota Camry around Tasmania for a week. My gosh my lounge is firmer than that. I agree, nothing like a firm seat for better comfort and support.

Each to their own I guess, I hate the BA Club Europe seat, the QF 734's have the same seat essentially in J and I can't stand them, always seem to slant off to one side, its like sitting crooked.

I have done at least 1,000,000 miles in the QF slimline seats and not once have I longed for something softer, apart from of course an op-up to J or perhaps P. Even my pillow and mattress is nice and firm.

Yeah, my matress is pretty firm - and so is what I share it with.
