QF code on train services

Does 1000 minimum miles apply to these? Any one know the add-on fare (must be sold in conjunction with QF flight)?

IainF May 2, 2007 12:51 am

OH no.....

I feel a trip to Parabadoo coming on....

NM, can you give me a lift in your bus please ?

:D

From QF agents web site

..the codeshare would allow customers to connect with Intercity-Express (ICE) rail services from Frankfurt Airport to Cologne, Dusseldorf, Hamburg, Hanover, Munich, Nuremberg and Stuttgart.
....
...
..
.
Reservations for the new codeshare services can be made via Qantas on 131313, or through licensed travel agents.

A couple of years ago I took a boat service from a QF service which incidently had a QF code on it and low and behold, managed to get the 1000 points minimum as well as applicable SCs. :D

FWIW, one came through automatically and the other required a manually.

I don't understand these rail code shares. Does it mean QF is responsible for selling a certain number of seats on each train? Or is it gimmicky marketing?

It opens up further possibilities, particularly with RTW products, whereby you don't have to pay for the rail add-on, it is included in the airfare.

Definitely NOT on the XONEX products whereby any land segments are specifically excluded according to the farerules!

Its marketing. Allows QF to say they serve Dusseldorf for example with connections.

Tyrolean May 3, 2007 5:23 am

Does anybody know if you can book the segments separatly?
Maybe my solution to get my 4 Segments on QF!

LH had some very cheap milage-runs in the past.
I see good old times coming back.

Mwenenzi May 3, 2007 5:37 am

Sydney - Dusseldoff is bookable on line on the QF Au web site

15:50 Sydney 05:50 Frankfurt QF5
07:44 Frankfurt 09:12 Dusseldorf QF3941

QF3941 is listed as aircraft type TRN and with a stopover in Cologne Cologne Railway

sxc May 3, 2007 5:47 am

Can you check through your luggage to Dusseldorf? ;)

lokijuh May 3, 2007 7:32 am

I assume this means if QF are running late they'll look after you if you miss your train. Flew to FRA last year and QF were 2 hrs late, due to mech probs in SIN, and we missed our train and were out of pocket several hundred $$. Although, to QF's credit after intially unsuccessfully pursuing through Travel Insurance (at QF's request), QF came good with the $$$ (but only because I was a WP).

No. Per the link in the OP.

No through check in process is available from a QF flight to the QF Deutsche Bahn service (or vice versa).

I wouldn't call this marketing. I think this is a good customer service allowing overseas visitors to Germany to get a good connection without the hassle of having to buy a train ticket in a foreign country. And if you even get miles for it: Great. I have a trip coming up to HAJ soon, so I might give it a try.

lokijuh: May I suggest that next time you miss your train at FRA, go to the DB booking office and explain the situation. Most likely they will give you a ticket on the next train - they have done this for me whenever QF5 is significantly late into FRA.

The rail DB travel planner (http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en?) is I believe one of the best trip organisers around, and allows you to buy and print your ticket from Aust. Add to that some of the best trains in the world, and you have a fast and comfortable way to get around Germany and even further abroad.

I know, and I have used them many times. But I know many people who would love the comfort of a QF ticket even when it will cost them extra.

Sure. But there are quite cheap domestic flights within Germany and Europe as well. www.lufthansa.de now allows to book oneways on the cheap fares, so you may combine rail and airtravel. The competitor is www.airberlin.de, which is a new merger of the old d-BA and airberlin. Since last year it is very easy to combine what you like.

Be careful: when book on LH: Chose an EU country as residency, or you will pay a fortune! Book without logging in. With electronic ticket and creditcard a propper adress is not needed.

If you travel more on thrains you may consider buying a "BahnCard" which offers 25% or 50% discount.

May I come back to the initial question of this thread?

Does 1000 minimum miles apply to these? And is it possible to book it separately or only in conjunction with QF flight?

Does anybody have a clue about the fare?

Kiwi Flyer May 6, 2007 4:15 pm

Available only in conjunction with QF flight not as stand alone.

Mwenenzi Aug 9, 2007 1:59 am

Anyone been on the QF train from FRA ??

I was going to in October but my plans changed yesterday. The interesting news was that QF was willing to ticket the train as part of a DONE4! Which is of course not within the fare rules but they would have allowed me to do this anyway.
So unfortunately I will not be able to report back in October.

According to the QF Booking Engine, No points are earned. Also as mentioned in a previous post, it can only be booked as part of a QF end-to-end ticket.

And they would charge you a fuel surcharge for that "sector" as well! So QF would get the sector revenue (since its a QF "flight" number) and the fuel fine, which would likely well cover the actual cost of the train fare.

For only AUD 140 first class, the train trip from Frankfurt to Cologne is a great way to experience "low flying" in comfort - still one of the fastest trains in Europe.
