Umbrellas

Can you take gold umbrellas with a pointy end as carry on?
I'm looking at the frequent flyer one and I'm not sure if I can take this on board Qantas/Virgin Blue/Jetstar dometic flights? What about international flights..?

My experience is that Golf umbrellas are checked baggage (Actually quite funny to collect an umbrella swirling around the baggage claim).

Anything smaller that fits into your backpack or carry on is ok for carrying onboard - but you may have to remove it for specialist security screening for flights before being able to place back into your carry on luggage.

Bugger :(
It might get damaged then :(

I brought a golf umbrella from SYD to BNE last month with no problem. It was tagged at check-in (complete with it's own "Priority" tag) and then I handed it in at the oversize baggage counter.
It arrived with my other baggage in BNE no problem.
I imagine the odds of mishap would increase with connecting flights, or international (though if the flight used containerised baggage to the destination, it should be harder to lose!) :)

Umbrellas are notorious for getting damaged en route.

I have previously placed an umbrella inside a bubble-wrapped poster tube, and checked it in at over sized luggage. Thankfully no damage was sustained.

Under IATA regulations you are entitled to carry an umbrella. If the local security arrangements prevent it being taken in the cabin, then the airline has to carry the umbrella in checked luggage at no extra charge to you, and it is not counted as a piece of luggage.

OMFG leny just buy the damn umbrella, as for being damaged wrap the thing in bubble wrap.

As for taking it on the plane why would you want to it's not like it's going to rain in the aircraft or anything, may be a different story when tiger airways start domestic ops

Buy the umbrella and stick it in a Postpak tube, it is not a security risk, TSA may disagree, but you may have troulbe putting it in the overheads.
Oh I would have loved an umbrella on my QF SYD-DBO trip, DH 8, torrential rain that had everyone saturated from the walk to the terminal to board the aircraft. Even the FA got very wet when they put the stairs up and it went all over her. Overall everybody on that plane was wet and the toilet was not cleaned from an overnight stay.....:td:

Remembering back before aerobridges were common, QF and AN used to have those bins full of umbrellas to walk to the plane with. Maybe they should keep some about for just such a situation (when the black clouds are about? :) )

some airlines still have them, but only at certain airports

and that isn't much help when deplaning by stairs - especially at places like ZQN where QF parks a long way away from the arrival gate so plenty of opportunity to get badly soaked

Nup, hasn't complained about the lack of noodles in QP's ... so I'm thinking more of a student doing some research ... there's plenty of similar question on AFF .

I remember when I first saw the brollies being handed out. 2003, OOL I was waiting for my QF 767 flight and they used motorised covered airstairs and there was a ground staffer handing out the umbrellas in a tropical downpour. DJ came in and they pushed, not motorised, their uncovered stairs up and the passengers were not given any umbrellas. I told my friend that is the difference between a "full service" airline and a budget carrier;)
