The Ashes

Not a posting about the burning of SCs (there - that's the relevance to the QF Forum...), but that quaint little jar with the last dreggs of the British Empire - looks very much like it might have a spiritual home in Oz again. Nice start to the Test lads!

Yes if I was part of the English team I would look at getting on my Virgin flight home quick smart :D Lets make it 2-0 this weekend!

But this time it was a more comprehensive 277 runs!

Lets look at the stats:
  • Australia scored 804 runs for the loss of 10 wickets. That is an average of 80.4 runs/wicket.
  • England scored 527 runs for the loss of 20 wickets. That is an average of 26.35 runs/wicket.
Hmm, now we need some way to get this at least slight on topic (well as much as necessary for the QF Forum :D ) since the Eggland team flies VS and the Aussie team just signed a 3 year deal with EK. Now which airline are they useing domestically? Both VS and EK have some linkage with DJ.

A Qantas flight was delayed yesterday due to Qantas running out of containers to fit the English team's bags into!

Interesting story. The 8:25am flight BNE-ADL is QF661 and is operated by a 737-800. I guess it would take a long time to locate baggage containers for a 737-800 since that aircraft type does not use containerised baggage.

So either Qantas had substituted a 767 for that flight yesterday, or someone has something not quite straight in the story.

Well, we managed to start better in the Adelaide Test, although a slow beginning. Nevermind, we're back on course now! Disappointed not to see Monty playing again though, could turn out to be a mistake - can't see us bowling out you Aussies twice on that pitch to be honest.

Incidentally, England's 370 in the second innings at Brisbane was the 18th highest fourth innings total in Test history. Not bad considering the carnage of the first three days! :)

Early days yet. That pitch is like a pool table at the moment but will start to open up, nothing in it for the spinners though right now.

Good to see we might have some competition.

Looks like we are in for an exciting final two sessions...I hope if England set a reasonable total Punter takes a few risks and goes for the win.

With 60-odd runs to go, Australia seem likely to win. How on earth can England manage to lose this after scoring 500+ runs and declaring...?!

Kiwi Flyer Dec 5, 2006 12:13 am

Depending on how you count it either 4th or 5th worst performance in terms of losing after scoring a lot of runs (and 2nd or 3rd if considering only teams that declared an innings).

The highest score by a team to not win or draw is Australia's 586 in 1894 (timeless test - lasted 6 days). Scores Australia 586 all out, England 325 all out & 437 all out (follow on), Australia 166 all out - England win by 10 runs.

Next highest non-winning/drawn score is Pakistan 574/8d (batting 2nd) in 1972/73. Scores Australia 441/5d, Pakistan 574/8d, Australia 425 all out, Pakistan 200 all out - Australia win by 92 runs.

Next is the tied game in which Australia made 574/7d in 1986. Scores Australia 574/7d, India 397 all out, Australia 170/5d, India 347 all out.

Next is Australia 556 all out in 2003. Scores Australi 556 all out, India 523 all out, Australia 196 all out, India 233/6 - India win by 4 wickets.

So 1 team has scored more in an innings, declared and lost. Another scored more, declared and tied game. 2 others scored more, bowled out and lost.

What is the difference between a QF Jumbo landing in Melbourne and a BA Jumbo landing in Melbourne?
