AVOD tips and Techniques

I've used AVOD here and there and have been fortunate that when AVOD has been available, it has worked OK.

I have had more problems on recent non AVOD flights where the 'interactive' part of the standard IFE was not working, so was stuck with the 150 minute loop. (ie No Games , news etc)

Last weekend AVOD generally worked ok on flights to and from HKG/MEL.

However, I came across one problem which it took a few minutes to resolve the first time; the second time it appeared it was a P-O-P to fix! :p

@:-) This and other discussion on the fallibility of current Qantas IFE gave me an idea for a new thread ... I suggest any should post the tips and techniques used in ones frequent travels to maximise thier Qantas IFE experiance ... AVOD or otherwise.

Starting the ball rolling:

• When using AVOD, if you have pressed a button activate a 'command' to do something, wait at least ten seconds for it to respond. Repeated pressings of buttons may result in your AVOD crashing; too much and most PAX will need to resort to books/playing cards.

• One wierd thing that happened to me, twice, was if an announcement [PA] was made while I had the video on pause, that I could not get it to play again selecting the |> play button. Simply received no response. The way I found to fix was to exit the video and then resume (this is an option given when re selecting a movie previously watched along with a restart option).

I have found that the buttons need to be presssed FIRMLY otherwise nothing happens.

My tip is to avoid where possible QF flights with AVOD. Still yet to have one without problems. NZ's avod much easier (although the pause to do anything is annoying) and SQ & EK's are the best.

My tip. Pick the first movie you want to watch from the mag.

When they turn AVOD on, get in quickly and start playing and avoid the slowdown as everyone turns it on. You can then play and pause at your leisure

Word is AVOD Patch # 6/7 is being applied and has brought a significant increase in stability and speed and reliability.

Cheers

I wonder whether the same patch would make FT any more stable!

Reports indicate FT has been /.'d (Slashdotted)

This means a link on a very popular site "SlashDot" that tends to cause the site being linked to sometimes go into melt down due to the number of people around the world accessing it.

Just back from Hong Kong with AVOD. It worked like a charm and was fantastic. I guess I am one of the lucky ones!

1. Pack good book in carry on.
2. Expect AVOD to be U/S
2. Always give each button press at least 10 secs to work as Serfty says. If this works, be amazed and celebrate with a few drinks!
3. If after 2 or 3 presses it still doesn't work - turn off and turn on and start again. If this works be pleasantly surprised - It's only taken a bit of effort to get it working.
4. If this fails, ask FA to reboot your system. If this works, be happy. You had to talk to the FA and they did eventually come when you pressed the call button and did what you asked - They may or may not have been in a good mood when they finally answered the call signal and it probably only took 30 minutes.
5. If this fails, get good book and start reading. Be happy that AVOD met your expectations and have a few drinks!

Unfortunately the non-AVOD aircraft seem to have caught the bug, if today's BNE-LAX QF175 was any indication. The CSM struggled for about 2 hours to get the stupid thing working to all zones and with audio (demanding customers aren't we). After a call to SYD maintenance and numerous reboots finally she coaxed it into action. "Not happy Jan!"

Well, this December I am taking my first Qantas longhaul flight and I was very much looking forward to trying out the award-winning system. ... BUT, now I have lost the majority of my enthusiam for it. :(

Just reading the never-ending negativism dished out at QF's AVOD system .. I really have all my fingers and toes crossed that my flight across the Pacific will be made a heck of a lot easier by the AVOD.. coz if it doesn't work.. then I'll be in a real pickle since I am not one to read books. :(

I've flown from SYD to LAX/SFO twice with Air New Zealand. Three of the four aircraft which had AVOD installed worked fine for me... but I will note that the last of those 4 trips.. the system didn't work for about 20 rows of their 772ER which had only been delivered 3 days earlier.

Other than that.. the NZ system worked fine. Had a little bit of lag at times.. but it kept on keeping on. My hope and enthusiam that QF's system will work faultlessly on my upcoming trip are slowly dwindling. I'm already trying to make contigency plans incase the system does decide to pack it in. :o

Let me see... mp3 player, crossword puzzles, my camera to take amusing facial expressions... umm.. any other suggestions

Had no problems with the system BNE-LAX, LAX-JFK, and back again in the last two weeks. The only disappointment was an older style AVOD on the LAX-BNE trip on 2nd Oct, where there was not as many movie/tv choices, and no rewind/pause etc as was fitted to all the other aircraft flown.

That's a non-AVOD fitted aircraft. With AVOD you either get all the functionality or not.
