What to do in PER?
 

I will be in PER early February for work, and plan to take a few days off to have a look around. Even though I have been to Oz before (SYD and Cairns), this is my first time on the west coast. Any suggestions on must do's or see's in PER or its vicinity?

What are your interests? Do you like wines, site seeing, boating etc? Whilst there is a huge amount that is available it's very easy to waste the time travelling between places. How long have you set aside? All these things will help come back with some constructive suggestions. @:-)

Perth is a long way from the rest of Oz and it's a long way between places in Western Australia so there is a real need to plan you time wisely! :D

Depends on how long you have.

For short (day) trips, think of Fremantle or Rottnest Island or driving to the wonderful beaches like Trigg or Scarborough.

If you have a weekend or longer, then think Margaret River - see my initial thread then my Trip Report.

If you are a mad-keen flyer, then think of day trips to BME (Broome) or KGI (Kalgoorlie). See my current thread.

Now, I'm sure that StevePER, perthite or Russell Corr will have something to add...

Just remember February in PER will be rather warm.

Margaret River or Albany will be about a 4 hour drive each way. Both have very nice wine / olive regions - my bias being the latter, which does have a couple of flights a day from PER.

I would recommend a trip to the Margaret river for sure (3hrs from Perth)...wineries, restaurants, surf beaches. if you don't fancy the drive the Swan Valley is closer (30 mins from the city) that also has wineries etc. The Perth Hills (about 1hr) are also nice for a day visit. Depends on what you enjoy doing.

Perth itself has a few things to see.

1. Fremantle is well worth a visit
2. Kings Park
3. Beaches - Cottesloe is a popular local beach.

There is more that I am sure others can recommend. If i was there for a short time I would try to do the above as a starting point.
