They are flying with BA & QF EDI-LHR-LAX-AKL. As far as they are concerned I'm USING Miles to fly via HKG and visiting a old workmate for a couple of days. :D

They would not understand the mileage run thing and would probably take the piss out of me for flying Business. As far as they are concenred the difference in cost between Y and J is an awful lot of beer.

Now that seems more like a Scotsman's perspective. But think how much beer and whiskey you get to consume on your way, along with being able to sleep horozontal (or very close to it) when you have over-consumed (if there is such a state of being) :o .
