Booking strategy for a July WAS-MEL flight

I'll be traveling to Melbourne on June or July. Current prices for a WAS-MEL R/T during these months hover around $1800-2000.
The US Qantas website shows $1k tickets from North America, but not during Jun/Jul.
I have no experience in this market, so I would welcome any insights. Does it make sense to book now? Should I wait? Thanks!

June/July is a peak travel time for this route so proces are accrdinly higher.

You might like to try booking an "Aussie Air-Pass" online, travelling in a shoulder season.

Perhaps book ex LAX and purchase a separate fare WAS-LAX?

I would suggest this too - IAD-LAX can run <$200. There is a Q fare on AA at $1350 which makes it approx $1550.

Also be aware that World Youth Day is being held in Sydney between the 15 - 20 July this year. There will be an influx of people who will travel to ports other than Sydney in the week or weeks leading up to the event.

Good ideas, thanks. I'll check into buying tickets separately.

Thanks for the heads-up. I read somewhere that they expect 500K participants.
