QF announces SYD-AKL-JFK
3x weekly SYD-AKL-JFK service will start in June 2023 on the 789. Flights will be numbered QF3/4, which, interestingly, were the old SYD-HNL-SYD flight numbers.

--->QANTAS ANNOUNCES DIRECT AUCKLAND–NEW YORK FLIGHTS AND UPGRADE TO LOUNGES
The launch of QF3 and QF4 will see the flying kangaroo return to New York three days a week initially, after a three-year COVID-induced hiatus. Flights will be operated by its Boeing 787 Dreamliners, with three new aircraft scheduled for delivery next year.
Qantas Group CEO Alan Joyce said flying via Auckland would provide better connectivity from more destinations in Australia, before an uninterrupted 16 hour flight to New York.

Interesting route. AKL-JFK is about 1000 miles less than SYD-JFK. Coming back is against the prevailing head winds

Airside transit in AKL is better for those from BNE, MEL, ADL who now endure the T3 Domestic<--->T1 International shuffle
QF close partner, AA have a planned DFW-AKL flight due to start 29 Oct 2022 to 25 Mar 2023(new route)

QF flying PER-AKL would be interesting against NZ. But do not see QF doing that.

QR are currently flying from AKL via ADL to DOH on a 777. Flew them AKL-ADL a couple of months ago and they were very good but not sure how long this sector will last before they revert to a direct service.

SYD-ORD is longer than BNE-ORD. AKL-JFK would have been selected on the basis of length of flight.

Now is no mention of ORD flights. Agree it would be a good destination. A route I would happily fly.

Just weeks before the inaugural Brisbane-Chicago flight on April 15 2020, Qantas was forced to suspend the service – and then its entire international network – as the Covid-19 pandemic took hold.
