Emirates (Qantas Codeshare) Downgrade

Hi Everyone,

I’m hoping someone can offer some advice on how I can proceed.

I’ve got an 081 ticket booked through Expedia from Dublin to Sydney and back. It’s in first using the Qantas codeshare on Emirates.

I’ve already taken the outbound and due to return on the 16th and 17th of June. Emirates have changed the plane for the final DXB to DUB leg and it no longer has first.

Expedia aren’t bent very helpful and Qantas won’t touch the booking. Expedia are saying my only option is to take the downgrade, but can’t tell me what kind of refund I would get.

I’d be happy to change dates or destination (eg into London instead) but Expedia are saying no. Qantas are happy to sell a first ticket for the same day via Dubai and Zurich into Dublin (ZRH to DUB in business which is okay) which I’d be happy with as well.

Is it just a case of keep trying with Expedia until I get someone who actually wants to help? Does anyone have any tips on how I can make it easy for them to help me? I’ve already given different flight options for example with no luck.

I’m reluctant to accept the downgrade until I understand what kind of money I’ll get back and my preference would be to remain in first for the bulk of the flight.

You have the worst of any possible combination
  • Booked via an on line travel agent
  • SYD-DOH-DUB in F .Both flights EK operated but QF marketed
  • QF 081 ticket
  • aircraft changed
  • half the trip done
Have you tried EK to take over the ticket?
But don't like you chances with EK or Expedia.

Thanks Mwenenzi.

I’ll give Emirates a call and see what they say.

Tricky one.

I doubt you will get any refund due to the downgrade. I know that some EK F fare rules specifically state that if you have to travel in a lower class then no refund will be paid. However this is a QF fare so it could be different.

Changing dates/routing will depend very much on how hard Expedia are willing to work for you on this. Sadly, probably not a lot. It all comes down to what the fare rules allow. A change of date should be fine (do EK offer F on any flights to DUB?) but a re-routing will be trickier and you could end up having the fare re-calculated.

I can't see EK taking over a QF ticket issued by Expedia, but you never know until you ask.

Good luck in getting this sorted!

You can also try calling QF instead of EK and ask to be rebooked on QF metal A380 SYD-SIN-LHR, if you have a high enough F fare then they will gladly do that -- I've done it before EK to QF change circa 6 years ago, precisely for the same reason (avoid downgrade). The tricky part is that QF cannot make the change even though QF issued ticket, as Expedia controls the booking, but if QF is willing then certainly possible. Getting EK to change your routing is much less likely as they still have good DXB-DUB service. Downgrade compensation from discounted F tends to be close to $0, I've had quite a few on AONEx tickets.
