No conclusive answer on the blocked seats, however it seems to be a common practice at Qantas. These blocked seats will slowly come available at higher fare buckets.

Will revisit next month.

What Qantas status do you have?

It seems Qantas systems are not functioning properly at the moment then.

Other than that have you tried having your Gold Frequent Flyer number out of the booking and then having it reinserted?

This may be important. My parents just made a booking for QF7/QF8, and they can only select and pay for row 85. But if I search in Expertflyer, I see it as wide open (not blocked).

I had this experience as well on my QF flights from DFW-SYD and back. This is about 6 weeks out. Quite suddenly almost everything is unavailable. Qantas updating their systems with a new pricing algorithm/model, or outage would be my guess. Nothing concrete though. I have paid seat allocations. Was tempted to move them to better seats, since those next to me are now occupied, but may sit on these for a while to see what happens.

Good thread.

Well, I did some QF bookings in International Y (for Jan/Feb 2020) over the last two days.
Flights operated by a variety of aircraft - A380, A332 (new Int config), B738.
During the booking process, after entering my QFF number (WP), I could select my Y seats as usual.
I was able to select from the usual allocation for WP members for all aircraft configurations in my itinerary, apart from those already selected or bassinet seats.

A friend of mine (no status, not QFF member) appeared to be able to select only row 28 for a B738 flight in July booked on Tues night.
But as of yesterday, he is able to select from row 18 onward any seats that is already not selected by someone else.

Possibly, however my flight is a 787 Dreamliner flight and I'm facing the blocked seats issue.
