The wording is simply:

As it talks about 115cm bags, 105 cm bags and garment bags, the 'total dimensions' could be taken to mean each one of those items by themselves. not the actual LxHxD.

Yes, the page is poorly constructed and has been abridged from what was published in the past, but they are indeed the maximums.

Here is how Qantas.com listed the sizes 20 years ago: (https://web.archive.org/web/19981212...tas.com.au:80/) [Select 'Flying with us', "Domestic Economy Class" then click GO]

If you have been able to carry your bag onboard in the past then that just good luck.

Other than that, if you bag does not comply with the dimensions of the sizer then it is oversized. End of Story.

Well call me a Qantas fan boy if you wish as I purchased the Qantas London 3 piece set... well 2 of them. The size of the small case is 56cm x 39cm x 20cm. I asked in Adelaide on Sunday to weigh my carry on (which was only 4kg) and apart from that, there's been no other mention in Sydney, LA or Portland. Maybe having the Qantas brand on the side they'll just have to take them regardless.

Regards,

Michael

Aren't you giving the airlines the benefit of the doubt by assuming they are the maximums? It doesn't state that. The sizer at the airport seems too late to be incorporated into the contract.

Volvo Mike's post below - QF issued bag is within total max dimensions but exceeds one of the individual ones. This seems to indicate individual dimensions are not totals.

Does anyone know the actual dimensions of the sizer? Presumably there are tolerances involved? (If not I’ll measure one next week!)

Qantas don't make those bags - they license the branding.

Qantas logo or no Qantas logo, @Volvo Mike's bag exceeds the maximum for carry on. It's fine for checked luggage.

Disagree.

And here's the evidence that it is the total dimensions, not individual that make up the 115/105: https://www.qantasstore.com.au/p/qan...laboard/179131

For sale on the Qantas site, with names that are distinct and unique to Qantas operations (Mascot, Longreach, Winton, Charelville, etc).

The link above is to a 'wheelaboard' - that cannot be taken to mean anything but cabin. The dimensaions? 46x34x25 (the latter exceeding the 23cm you state applies). 105cm total (therefore compliant), but with different component dimensions to the ones stated on the website.

A company can't sell a product under its own branding/licence, in its own store, and then refuse carriage of that bag.

And for the QF sold https://www.qantasstore.com.au/p/ame...e-pink/1001398
<snip>
Carry On Notes:
In Australia all our airlines adhere to either a 105cm or 115cm (total size) domestic carry-on bag size limit.
<snip>
No mention about any particular dimension.
For that bag "External Size: 55cm x 35cm x 24/26cm (expanded) (includes wheels and handles)" so 55 + 35 + 24 =114cm

A site selling cases does not make an authoritative source for Qantas's size limits

feel free to believe what you want, but if the agent says the bag isn't going on board, you will be down to choosing whether to check it in or leeave it

Has anyone complained to qantas about the enforcement and/or inconsistencies in size limitations? If so what has the response been?

Maybe not. But it makes QF look pretty stupid if it is selling cabin bags on its own website which are clearly claimed to be compliant in the product description.

But then, the wording on QF's website clearly addresses maximum total dimensions.

IF the HxLxW dimensions were supposed to be each individual maxima there would be absolutely no point in discussing the combined total, now would there?! Each would logically need to be defined with their attendant maximum (which they're not, not to mention the various examples portrayed which demonstrate compliance with total dimensions).

As to the 56x36x23 supposed maximum versus the QF retail bag at 46x34x25:

The 56cm height can't be a maximum because the example of a garment holder is provided.

Besides, if 56cm can fit, then 46cm can.

Similarly, if 36cm can fit , then 34cm can.

Similarly, if 36cm can fit, then 25cm can (rotate the bag).

IF QF is serious about this cabin baggage purge it should get its website information presented in a manner, which is completely unambiguous. No excuses.

Yet again, a bad job from the QF web team...seriously, folks it ain't hard for a person of average intelligence and literary competence to present the information in a clear, accurate, and unambiguous manner.

If the dimensions are indeed supposed to be maxima then QF has to also fix it's retail website (clearly and utterly branded as QF) and not promote non compliant merchandise as compliant - having just fallen foul of the ACCC over accurate portrayal of product and service you might think QF would attempt to clean up its act.

Claiming that the QF information is clear and unambiguous, which some are attempting, is a fool's errand.

And, as already observed in an earlier post, presenting a dimension cage after the fact (post sale) ain't gonna cut it in terms of complying with consumer law.

It is so inconsistent and becoming a joke!
Slows up boarding and then delays the planes.
People remove items to reach 7 kgs and then reinsert them while queuing on the airbridge.
It is nothing more than an exercise in futility.

The international/domestic transfer is flawed too.
Honestly this is a flawed initiative.

It sounds like it is flawed in that it (a) isn't being done for every flight and providing a consistent enforcement and (b) that overweight bags are not being properky dealt with

consistent and proper enforcement and people would soon get the message and issues of time to handle would dissipate
