Changing FF program on check-in
I'm a Marco Polo Gold but only a QFF Bronze. When I booked a Qantas international flight recently, I put my Marco Polo number on the booking because, as a Oneworld Sapphire, it allowed me to select seats for free. But travelling on a cheap sale fare, I wouldn't get any Marco Polo status credits or miles for the ticket. Can I just ask to substitute in my QFF number onto the booking when I check in?
The only downside to this that I can see is that once I am a lowly QFF Bronze in the system, there's no chance of an op-up. But what are the chances of an op-up for a Oneworld Sapphire on Qantas anyway? I assume Qantas gives priority to QFF Platinums and Golds (and possibly Silvers) before Oneworld Sapphires? (Not complaining, CX does this in reverse...) |
The chances of an up-op with QF are low for any status level.

I cannot recall the last time (or indeed any time) that I had an op-up on QF. But they have happened on CX - specifically J to F - and very welcome too especially when F on CX was about the best in the air. Also had op-ups on FJ and SK, but these were about 25 years ago. In all seriousness, I'd forget about op-ups unless you can get top QF status (ie CL) and that's 2 levels above QF WP and 3 levels above QF SG (which is slightly above CX MPG in the pecking order).

You can change your FF number at check in, the agent will print out your boarding pass according to your CX status, so you'll get the lounge access and express security pass. It will also allow you to queue at gate as OWS. You membership number will be changed in their system.

I would make absolutely sure the FF scheme you wish to credit to is in your boarding pass. In fact I would change it today in the AY or QR site then check on QF. I have one booking I need to phone up and query as it shows both BA and QF on the Qantas.com site. Lounges and checkin will provide you with access access based on your higher status card. It takes some extra clicks in the system to ensure the right program is charged for lounge entry. (Yes on occasion I have met some lounge agents with a different view...) Then on leaving the lounge, I check again that the only FF number is the one I wish to credit to and they cannot see the other one anywhere. I know it may sound pedantic but these systems have an annoying habit of not updating correctly, and trying to get miles credited when you have the FF number on a BP of the wrong program and you need to manually chase miles, is so painful I cannot be bothered anymore. Further to KF's post above. In some cases of a multi-sector journey, where you wanted just the first segment changed, you need to check that none of the subsequent sectors have also been changed.
I have been caught out in the way making such a change in the lounge with Air NZ. |
