Direct flights SYD JFK in January?

Havent been here for a while, so was wondering if anybody else had spotted the direct Qantas flights Sydney to New York using a Dreamliner, I presume starting in January.

The 'direct' SYD-JFK flights QF11/12 are already being operated by A380 on the SYD-LAX leg and 787 on the LAX-JFK leg. The 787 physically operates BNE-LAX with a different flight number.

Weren't they truly direct at an earlier stage, using the same physical 747 for SYD-LAX and LAX-JFK?

Yes. Back in 2008 I flew it straight through (in Y )
a couple of hours @LAX to go through US Immigration and Customs
and then back on the near empty 747 for the flight to JFK

A long, long time ago. Pre-A380 days. It's been operated by AKL-LAX, MEL-LAX and BNE-LAX over the years.

Even longer ago it was operated by the same 707 ex SYD and it carried on to LHR (trans Atlantic).

Well, it didn’t go to LAX - in those days it was HNL-SFO-JFK.

My grandfather flew 707s for Qantas.
