Compensation for Qantas flight delay

A mate of mine has been caught up in a delay in LAX and it would be interesting how QF has managed his delay of 48 hours.
Apparently, he was booked on QF 16 in Business to Brisbane 8/04/2019 and the aircraft had a birdstrike and cancelled.
He is having to wait 2 days in LAX before they can get seats on Wednesday 10 April QF 16..

Paid ticket or award? (but should not make a difference)
He should keep receipts for all out of pocket expenses.
