-QF 146

nice upgrade for QF, I don't know how QF previously decided to compete with LA, EK, NZ, CI which all have wide body jet offering...

I wonder if this means EK will go trans-tasman from somewhere else to go back upto 28 e.g. DXB-PER-AKL and then QF has a codeshare presence on AKL-PER

I imagine this is connected to a notification I've just received that my SYD-MEL QF flight in business has switched from A330 to B737 :-(

Probably totally unconnected: this sort of substitution happens all the time.

LA only has 1 service a day at a pretty awful departure time
EK is ceasing operation, but even now only has 1 per day
CI has less than 1 per day - but is a great option on days it operates
NZ has most flights operated by single class aeroplanes - only a couple of flights with business class
QF has business class on all flights and several flights a day

The main competition to QF is NZ

An typical weekday on AKL-SYD with NZ now:

NZ101 0700 772
NZ103 0900 772
NZ107 1610 772/789

With an few A320 services in between to fill the gaps, the majority of NZ's capacity on AKL-SYD is operated by 777/787s.

I'm looking for an award seat in mid-July on QF146 AKL-SYD.
It looks like Qantas.com has the flight listed for purchasing but doesn't appear on the award page. Is this is glitch? It's not showing sold out -- it just doesn't appear.

Most likely just some teething problems while they re-allocate the flights, and re book everyone onto the new serrvices.

Yes - but looking at it, a large number of flights are with small aeroplanes

wed : 2x320 + 1x777 + 1 x787
thu : 3 x 320 + 2x787
fri : 3 x 320 + 1x777 + 2x787
sat : 1 x 320 + 1x777 + 1x787
sun : 2 x 320 + 1x777 + 2x787
mon : 1x320 + 2x777
tue : 2x320 +2x789

14 services a week operated by 320s, 6 by 777s and 8 by 787s

The most number of seats are with large aeroplanes, but 50% of the services are with smal ones. Only 50% of the services offer a business class

Looking at the upcoming week, Qantas has 1 x 787 in the morning and currently relies on EK for a large aeroplane in the afternoon. QF does have a higher frequency of services over NZ

QF has a higher number of flights a day to NZ all offering a business class cabin - just not such a good one

wed QF : 5 services vs 4 NZ
thu QF : 5 services vs 5 NZ
fri QF : 6 services vs 6 NZ
sat QF : 5 services vs 3 NZ
sun QF : 6 services vs 5 NZ
mon QF : 5 services vs 3 NZ
tue QF : 5 services vs 4 NZ

When booking business class based on schedule, with 37 services vs 14 , QF has an advantage over NZ

Becomes daily (and presumably 10 per week in peak summer season).

Was booked in F QF redemption on EK in early August SYD-AKL-DXB-LHR. Now it seems to be changed, with no notification. Somewhat disappointed at losing an EK F sector and replacing with QF J. We had booked a car from home to SYD as EK allow this. Should we get any miles back and a replacement car or are QF allowed to downgrade a partner booking without compensation?

Before the introduction of the A332 NZ offers 264 additional premium class seats over Qantas. What matters is they cover the morning / afternoon peaks with 3 Class aircraft, then 1 class aircraft in the off-peak. There would be very little business demand for an midday AKL-SYD.

NZ Weekly J/PE Seats - 708
QF Weekly J Seats - 444

It also relates back to most New Zealand business will not allow you to fly AKL-SYD in J, most have an cheapest Y fare policy for short-trips.

NZ also has the advantage for being able to offer PE, which to be honest the hard product is just about the same as QF's 738s J. If your already got lounge access its pretty much the same for half the price.
