Clean fingers?

In the QF J lounge having breakfast. Presentation is good. Staff welcoming. But the customers (some anyway) insist on using their fingers to gather food rather than the tongs provided in every bowl of food. They reach around or over the tongs and grab. I'm not a germophobe, but this practice is horrible. Do they know their fingers are cleaner than the tongs, or are they just grubs? No wonder gsstro outbreaks happen (thinking cruise ships).

Scenario.
1. Someone with cold (sneezes into their hand/wiped their nose/etc..).
2. Uses tongs.
3. Someone else uses same tongs, then wipes their eyes.

Tongs are not all its cracked up to be.
Just saying.

My view, its ok for items like buns (provided you dont touch neighbouring bun).
A must for salads, etc..

Pity to know that people have no decorum in using the thongs provided.
Scary thought too.

People are less likely to use Tongs to hold a handkerchief, scratch their bum, wipe their nose, open a toilet door, and many other things.

It's pretty gross. I've not seen it personally except the odd occasion if say a slide of bread falls over the side of the basket or something

I always use the tongs it's what they are there for. I remember one time in ADL being embarrassed because I was having trouble grabbing some cheese and it kept falling out and it would have been SO much easier to just go pick it up but I wanted to do the right thing. Think the guy behind me was getting a bit annoyed but yeah it's right to do the right thing.

I think what is disappointing is when (some) people have no thoght or consideration for others.. and this extends to things like using the tongs in the ham tray to grab something else... that could be very offensive to a jew/muslim/vegetarian etc not to mention contaminate the other food item potentially. Some people just don't think of these things (or care)

Most are pretty good though that I've seen.

Here's a question though - if there's one item in the dish left do you use tongs or just grab it?

Correct use of tongs by everyone ensures food safety. Its just not acceptable to have the mentality: i know where my fingers have been and what they have been doing, but I don't know where the tongs have been.

How often do we hear of people complaining of food poisoning from airline food when there is every chance they got the bug from poor hygene totally unrelated to the food.

ex Virginians perhaps, having been only used to 'finger' food? :P
