Holding awards

I'm looking at booking EK through QF points, however my QF balance is low and it would need to be topped up with Citi TY points. According to the guide in the Citi forum, this is a two day process. Has anybody had any luck with getting to hold an award ticket while waiting for points to land?

I looked through the QF site and the guide here - couldn't see anything but maybe I missed it.

Award Hold not possible in my opinion. When booking an award on line there is no facility for a hold.

Many other ffp's require less points/miles/cash surcharge than QF for any particular award flight (AA for example)

That may well be the case, but trying to get a DXB-NBO flight on AA points is difficult.

We may look at using KE to book the flight, but that will result in having to figure out how to gain a few more Chase UR points, when we are overflowing with Citi TY points instead.

DXB-DOH-NBO doesn't look to hard to do using AA points on QR

It's true, but it adds another connection in an already tedious routing (GUW-ALA-DXB-DOH-NBO-KEU) and I already spend more time than I'd like to in airports.

I'd prefer to use more miles for convenience, even if that doesn't make sense to most of FT, because flying most places from GUW is a pain and I have to do it a bunch already. Anything that makes it less so (even if that seems trivial) is a big win.

Have you considered just booking a paid ticket on Kenya Airways 787 service from DXB-NBO at USD1054 r/t including taxes and charges. Given that EK would charge USD753 r/t just in taxes and charges ( USD371 one way ) , seems like a reasonable option

Results in a 16 hour layover from the connection in from ALA though (KC is the only airline flying in). Comes back to trading money for efficiency at this point. We'd prefer to eat the higher costs and get to spend the night in a proper hotel in NBO, rather than spend 16 hours in Dubai during the day, then fly overnight. Keep in mind that we have to fly from GUW the previous day to make the ALA-DXB connection.

Fair enough if tring to use EK (via QF). EY (via AA) may be another option.
But does not help the QF hold problem.

What is KEU? Shows as an error in GCM

EY is great if you can make the dates line up to the two days a week they fly to TSE. A quirk of the AA award chart is that Kazakhstan is part of the Indian subcontinent so there are some good value EY redemptions compared to the cash price. But, it's hard to make the dates work with Wed/Sat flights unfortunately when those Wed/Sat flights are too early out/too late in to connect to GUW, so you have to overnight again both ways.

KEU is a small Massai Mara airstrip - I saw that it didn't come up in GCM. Odd - it comes up in the IATA search.

We most likely will transfer over and hope availability holds, if not they can get used eventually on a flight to PER (my original home) or somewhere else.

That's right - so I actually missed a airport in my ittinerary! It's worse than originally stated.

While Wilson is not far from NBO the traffic can be challenging

Untrue. QFF have the ability to hold awards for 72 hours to enable points transfers between family members or partners such as AMEX. I have used it countless times.

I have only invoked it as a WP.

Thanks for the data point. If/when I try it I'll let you know (having not held status with QF for ten years).

I too was able to hold an award twice and I'm a nobody with QFF. Not a worry each time. This was burning on BA/RJ once, and the other time on EK.
