QF Award Release MEL-LAX and SYD DFW 2016
Appears that QF had a massive release of F awards on DFW-SYD-DFW and LAX-MEL-LAX
or MEL-LAX-MEL and SYD-DFW-SYD)
Started at around 10AM PST....

Perfect timing for me after booking a rather long winded route with only HKG-LHR in F and I got a chunk of cash back with the savings in fees.

I just did something similar, swapping a mix of AU-HKG in J and HKG-LHR in F to MEL-DXB-LHR all F. Much better option in my book as I love the QF A380

The first week of October is school holiday/vacation for all states & territories, so may be more demand for long haul awards.

I saw an absolute dearth of seats around April 7-11, which I believe NSW (others?) school holdidays as well

I dont doubt it.
My little snapshot is just that, a little snapshot- not broad experince...
I have (had ) 600k AVIOS and was sitting on Sabre as QF released every day at 10AM sydney time (and set up alerts too on EF), so not using the AA window... I did not see a single F seat after April 6 until April 11 on either of the SYD flights. On the later mass release alluded to in the OP, there was one F seat on MEL-LAX on 4/7.
I have two F on April 6, which is Wednesday before the vacation starts
Arguably I may have not seen other seats in their first few seconds/minutes of 'life'
