QF First Class

I have an upcoming flight on QF in F. Any advice on specific drinks to order, anything unique, and how to maximize the experience? Thanks!

Qantas is pretty proactive (compared to someone like CX). You won't find yourself missing out on anything because they'll either bring it all to you (amenity kits, PJs etc), or they'll offer to do it for you (make your bed when it looks like you might be ready for sleep).

The wine list is fairly good with some excellent Australian wines. And there is some top shelf champagne as well. The food on board can be quite good, so you may want to bear that in mind before filling up in the lounge prior to departure.

If you are flying from Australia, the First class lounges in MEL and SYD are worth getting to the airport with a couple hours up your sleeve. Make sure you have an Aussie contact number in your booking and the First Host will call you the day before departure to organise your spa treatment.

Overall Qantas has a fairly relaxed F experience. The major problem is QF crews are inconsistent and they can make or break a flight. (It is however very rare that all the crew working F will be having a bad day... usually there will still be one rising above whatever problems they're having.)

Food is better ex-SYD/MEL than ex-LAX/DFW, fwiw. Wines change regularly and the Aussie reds are generally stellar, as is the (sweet) dessert wine offered which is well worth trying if you think you don't like sweet wine. Duty free shopping on-board is above average and with the exchange rate might be cheaper than in US (one of the perks in F is first selection for duty free, as many items sell out).

The F seats are extremely comfortable. PJs are of good quality, though the amenity kit is quite poor. Food out of LAX last month was ghastly, I ended up not eating most of the supper/late dinner items I ordered; breakfast was much better.

From the US to Australia and back, expect full F cabins.

As for cabin crew, they are hit or miss, with most of the SYD/MEL crews not being particularly outstanding.

Any or all of these with the cheese plate:

Seppeltsfield Paramount Collection Rare Muscat – Barossa Valley, SA
Seppeltsfield Paramount Collection Rare Tokay – Barossa Valley, SA
Seppeltsfield Para Grand Tawny – Barossa Valley, SA
Seppeltsfield Solero DP63 Grand Muscat – Rutherglen, Vic
Seppeltsfield Solero DP57 Grand Tokay – Rutherglen, Vic

Ask what the dessert wine being served in Business Class is as often it will be the De Bortoli Noble One which IMHO is better than the First Class dessert wine

Or a Bundaberg Ginger Beer :p (licks lips not sticks out tongue)

There's some good information and comment in a similar contemporary thread on another forum with information like this:

* Day before your SYD departure First Host will call to see if you want spa treatment, discuss seating etc. Make sure your contact details (mobile #) are in order. If you don't hear from them by the afternoon, call them! (Ask for F host in the SYD F lounge);

* At SYD, If you will need assistance with bags alighting from cab etc, inform the First Host and some-one will meet you at the curb;

* Check in early and proceed to the F Lounge and let the enjoyment commence! Dining is highly recommended!

* Seating: I like column A, as the aisle only serves that column; the other aisle serves both middle and other window column seats (ie less traffic);

* I like rows 2,3 or 4, as I find row A is subject to traffic to toilet and FAs accessing the cupboard adjacent and row 5 has the galley behind, but there are no bad seats in F!

* DXB EK F lounge is sensational. The a la carte dining is as good as anywhere, in my experience. The Duty Free, on the other hand was very meh

* Boarding a QF flight into F is a bit odd from the DXB F lounge, as its set up to service EK F, which is on the upper deck of their A380s. But you'll survive!

Slightly off topic, but relevant to the food out of LAX comment. The food LAX-JFK on QF11 a couple of weeks ago was also ghastly. I've flown that sector a few times and the food was remarkable for its hideousness. We were also in a clapped out 747, remarkable for the poor state of its Skybed seating - cushions crushed, loose and stained. After the transpac in the quiet and comfortable F cabin, the J 747 cross-country flight was a rude awakening. I have to say that it compared very unfavourably to a subsequent transcon on AA in the "F" cabin on a non-flagship route (JFK-SAN), which notwithstanding the absence of lie flat seats, provided what seemed to be a less tired forward cabin on a 737-800, with a pretty decent cabin service - plain but fairly tasty food, a good tablet-based inflight entertainment offering and attentive drinks refills.

I find the ex-MEL crews in F consistently pretty good. I've got to know several of the MEL-based F crew and they provide a cheery and attentive service. I actively try and avoid SYD transits so hardly ever encounter SYD-based crews.

I usually connect through on LAX-MIA and find the old AA angled flat seats on the 772 much more comfortable than the Skybed. The lack of cushioning on the skybed even with that "mattress" is very noticeable. As of course is the infamous droop.

But the droop is one of the easiest things for the punter to fix ( notwithstanding, it shouldn't have drooped in the first place - ie it was a really good idea, but failed in the marketplace -like the apple watch as a wearable check-in device )

Another vote for Noble One. I am not much of a drinker but it's good stuff. Very sweet. Food is very good as well. Usually some interesting soups as well.

There's a good Qantas First Trip Report that I just read. Maybe check it out.

On the food, I find the opposite (better of out LAX). Maybe because I always order the fish dish, and the fish is better out of LAX. LAX has Chile Sea Bass or Halibut. SYD/MEL serves Australian fish like Barramundi, which I do not like as well as Sea Bass. I know Barramundi is viewed as a substitute for Sea Bass - but I will take the Sea Bass. Just personal preference.

Champagnes are not as good since they dropped Dom Perignon and Krug, in my view. They seem to serve Heidsieck and mostly Taittinger now.

Hey Mark are you departing SYD?

The lounge is always a highlight for me.
