Hi all

A newbie to Qantas, after flying to Singapore last week on a Qantas business return from Christchurch and from various domestic jetstar flights, i am only 95 credits short of gold, but these need to be earned by 28th Feb on the website. i figure I might as well go for it and look at a business trip to Australia.

Some questions:
- Is the 28 February strict, will they allow some flexibility (i.e. flying in March) and do they look at a rolling 12 month period like air NZ?
- If I buy a one way business class flex ticket from CHC-MEL the website routes me via SYD. Looking at the calculator on the website, CHC-MEL in business flex is 90 credits, or do I add CHC-SYD (90 credits) + SYD-MEL (45 credits) giving me a total of 135. I will be booking one ticket.
- related to the first question, if i do get gold status, I have some business class flights to Europe late in the year on CX, will I start back from 0 on my gold requal or is there a rolling 12 months that applies?

I would not expect date flexibility for status level (re)qualification.

SCs are earnd per sector and not per trip. So, you'll get SCs for CHC-SYD as well as SYD-MEL.

Once you reach your membership year anniversary date, SCs reset to zero and you start again. But the status you attain at your anniversary date (or prior) is good for 1 yr from this date.

Just to clarify og's statement: the status you attain is good for the remainder of your qualifying year PLUS the following year. For example, if you earn Gold in December and your membership year ends on May 30, you will hold Gold for 18months.

Not so much of an issue for the OP since it looks like they will just make the cut-off.

CHC-SYD-MEL should net 135 SC flex J or 120 for a saver/sale J. Since you need 95, no need for flex.

QF won't budge on the 28 Feb so you need to fly at least the one way before the end of Feb to get the SC's to take you over the 700.

If you fly the return in march and get another (for example) 120 SC, they will then count for your next year qualification (re-qual) for Gold, which you only need 600 for, so you're >20% there.

QF does not have rolling qualification periods - it is strictly off your member year (anniversary to anniversary).

No reset upon gaining a higher status.

Earning is per flight (as long as not a direct flight on a single flight number).

Slight change of plan, I am now going to sydney, looking to book one way first class on Qantas (but operated by emirates), CHC-SYD

My understanding is that I get the qantas earn rate if its a Qantas flight number (QF8765), so according to their calculator 120 status points one way, no difference between first saver and first flex, is that right?

I just ran a dummy booking and the review page provides the SC and points earn (if you're logged in, it will use your status to calculate points).

You are correct: 120SCs for EK CHC-SYD in F if booked on QF codeshare, the same for saver and flex - and 5000points if you're WP.

Just out of interest, my wife was in a similar position to qualify for silver last year and sent QFFF an email outlining her travel and her confirmed upcoming travel and they confirmed her silver as a result. Having said that, from memory she was only shy by 10 or 20 SCs though.

Anyway, it may be worth a shot.

Last year I was 80 points away from requalifying for Gold - my membership year ends on June 30. I had a return J ticket on LAN Sydney-Auckland booked for 30 June - 2 July.

On 12 June Qantas re-upped my membership, sending me a letter saying that although I had not met the requirements, they were thanking me for my loyalty. That's the 3rd or 4th time they have done that. I was kind of miffed because I could have saved myself the hassle and expense of the status run, but these things are unpredictable.

I used to receive those letters as well when my requalification flights were in the last month and sometimes did not quickly credit to my account.
IIRC you only get one chance for the complimentary re-qual so hopefully if you need it in the future it kicks in but of course never count on it if you really want to keep your status.
