Quantas flight SYD-BOS - missing a segment?

So a friend is scheduled to leave Sydney today, arriving in Dallas tomorrow to connect to Boston on QF 4520 (operated by AA). Because of the foul weather in Boston, the folks at Quantas were able to rebook him on a flight on Monday from DFW-BOS. However, he only has 2 weeks to spend with his significant other in Boston and losing an extra day kind of sucks.

My question is this - I was able to put an award ticket on AA on hold for him to fly out first thing Sunday morning. If he takes my award flight and misses the segment on Monday morning, will Quantas cancel his entire itinerary? All flights are Quantas flight numbers (I'm AA Platinum and they couldn't help me), with the DFW-BOS and BOS-DFW legs on AA metal.

I have been in situations on British Airways where I was going to be delayed for 2 nights and found another way to get to my destination (LHR-CDG) - British Airways did not cancel my return flight.

Any advice here would be greatly appreciated - I want to help my friend see his SO and not lose an extra day, but I don't want him to be stuck in Boston with no way back to Australia.

As far as I know, you'll have to speak with the carrier that issued the tickets. Being irrops due weather, they may be quite accommodating. Name changes on tickets may be more of a problem though - many carriers don't allow it.

And there is no "U" in QANTAS :)

If AA found award space for you, they can simply change (no penalties because of weather waiver) the Monday segment to Sunday. No need to go through the award ticket mess.

However, worth a significant caution that BOS may be closed or on limited ops on Sunday and, if the Sunday flight is cancelled, Monday will have thousands of backed up pax so your friend may sit at DFW for days.

What flight is he on - QF 7 (SYD-DFW)? If you leave today, you arrive today, not tomorrow. As already indicated, you/he needs to call QF.
