Has it started already?

Received an email from Emirates yesterday, with an 'exclusive' 5% discount off any fares from the UK to Dubai, the Far East, Australia etc.

I've never considered booking with Emirates, let alone signed up for their offers, so it seems strange that they have my email address.

Coincidence? Or have QF started sharing their customer database with their new partner?

Doubt it. It's far too soon.

IIRC it is expected to take 6 months until the QF-EK deal has been approved, anti-trust-wise etc.

Absolutely not. Until the deal is given "interim approval to begin commercial planning" by the ACCC QF and EK officials are not even able to meet/talk to begin building the agreed tie-up, let alone do things like you suggest.

I also would be interested to know (under relevant data protection laws etc) whether they can legally even hand over your emails to another company, and I would also question the commercial sense of them doing so - why would QF give its customers data to another company when they could just directly email you any such deals (that would emanate from the new partnership) themselves?

I would thus strongly suspect that EK got your email address some other way.

Only 1 submission posted on the ACCC site so far...

In a submission to the 2010 QF/BA JSA renewal application, EK called alliances "opportunistic and self-interested".

I am laughing now...reminds me some little brit wearing a bear and long-ish hair: You can not do that! But if I am doing that then it is OK.

Or maybe a case of "You can't do that! But if you are going to let them do it, I will too, I need to do it to compete!"
