Codeshares

I was just pricing up a LHR-PER/SYD-LHR in W. BA comes up at about £1450 with all flights on QF metal but BA flight numbers. The same flights with QF flight numbers comes to about £2,400. Is this common? I'd much prefer the QF flight numbers to get my 4 sectors in for this year, but at the additional cost of £1,000 I'm tossing up whether its worth it or not. I've only looked so far on ba.com and qantas.com. Any other suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

BA frequently has better fares for premium economy than Qantas. Rather than spending GBP1000 just to get a QF flight, if this would impact getting/renewing QF status, I would look at crediting to another scheme where u can get similar status. Crediting to BA with a Continental Europe address will get close to BA Silver status or crediting to AA will get Gold status and part way to platinum

Do be aware , that the flight to Perth ( assuming Asia - Perth ) may well not have a premium economy cabin

Also BA has been pricing non-UK origin premium fares much lower than starting at LHR, you might check AMS-LHR-Oz to compare prices, it may be cheaper even when including the cost of AMS-LHR-AMS flight (this also reduces or eliminates the UK APD of GBP 90 depending on how you position). QF does often offer cheap FRA-Oz premium fares, so that might be cheaper than the BA price ex-LHR and would get you the QF squiggles.

If you have time in Oz, a simple multi segment run can earn you the needed four QF https://www.qantas.com.au/img/icons/icon_wave.gif squiggles inexpensively (at least much less than £1000).

Also, have a look at "Any Seat" Awards - a SYD-xMEL-HBA vv economy¹ journey can be had for 24,000 QFF points and AUD140 (will earn 4https://www.qantas.com.au/img/icons/icon_wave.gif, 40 SC and 4000 QFF points)

¹ FWIW, a SYD-xMEL-HBA vv Business Class journey can be had for 48,000 QFF points and AUD190 (will earn 4https://www.qantas.com.au/img/icons/icon_wave.gif, 160 SC and 5000 QFF points)

When BA has a sale on, this often happens - and it's a very good deal when you can find it.

If you can free up a little time in Sydney, you should be able to do SYD-CBR-SYD-CBR-SYD for less than AUD 400 to get your four ~ - that's much better value than paying £1,000 extra just for the ~. Sign up for QF's emails and try to book when there's a sale on - you can often get these for about $90, and sometimes $80 or even less. (Obviously, it depends on when you're going and whether you can wait for a sale that covers your travel dates.)

Thanks for all the advice everyone. I think I'll do a few domestic sectors to get my ~s. If I want to credit points/sc to QF, but use BA miles to upgrade on a BA operated sector with BA flight#, is this possible? I called BAEC but they couldn't give me a definite answer.

I think it should be possible.

I don't think I've done it this way round, but thinking through it:-

  • [*]
  • [*]

And I know I can reliably get this to work the other way around, although it's not directly comparable because of the different system operated by QF for its upgrades.
