Personally I like the 747 and really it still works so why not just update it with better technology instead of creating the new beast.

The more radical the design the more likely issues

If we all followed your advice, we would still be spending months on boat to get from Australia to Europe and vice versa

BTW, 787 is not a replacement for 747. It seems you are not aware of 747-8 development (http://www.boeing.com/commercial/747...ackground.html)

Yes, and that is certainly a nice, relaxing way to travel - IF one is so inclined ;-) No jet-lag, either.
