AFP is reporting that it just landed with smoke coming from the underbelly, was immediately surrounded by six fire engines.

Let's hope everyone is safe.

It wouldn't be from the engine, but rather the nacelle (if the parts were accurately described as "engine" parts). It is possible that part of the nacelle might have liberated without there being an engine failure at all. Way too early to know, though.

I am not sure if Rolls-Royce sells the Trent 900 to Airbus as a propulsion system (i.e. the engine, nacelle and components) or if it just sells the bare engine. If the latter, and if the failure occurred in the nacelle, then it is an Airbus issue and not a Rolls issue.

I thought the same thing. I wonder if people thought it was from the tail because the Qantas emblem was visible on the part.

Looks like it might be the engine

"One of the engines on the left wing looked to be missing, and the area around it was black, the reporter said."

Most people would think the same, that when you see the emblem and huge chuck of it, it would have came from the tail.. But now a days the emblem can be found in so many different places of an airline..

If the tail falls off, won't you in essence lose control of the aircraft?

I wouldn't put too much faith in eyewitness reports.

And of course, every news report is again pulling out the line that Qantas has never suffered a fatal crash. Of course they have - they lost plenty of prop planes in the early days. They've just never lost a jet.

Australian Frequent Flyer board has gone into meltdown, perhaps we'll hear shortly from AFFers who may have been on board.
