MS - JNB-CPH/VIE/Europe - 20060 ZAR / $1053+ USD r/t - Business

After replying to this thread (https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/35994818-post6.html) with a flight option from Vienna to Johannesburg I noticed that the return trip had a base far of $138 and thought maybe EgyptAir had made an error. Unfortunately that doesn't appear to be the case, but you can still a Star Alliance flight option at a slightly lower price than Kenya Airways offers between Johannesburg and Europe on a very limited number of dates in March 2024.

EgyptAir - Johannesburg, South Africa (JNB) to Copenhagen, Denmark (CPH) via Cairo, Egypt (CAI) - 20060 ZAR / $1053 USD / 981 EUR roundtrip in business.

Depart by March 31, 2024 and return by May 31, 2024. Book by tomorrow, Feb 14, 2024. Minimum stay is 4 days and a free stopover is included.

Working Dates / Examples
Destination - Copenhagen, Denmark (CPH) - 20060 ZAR / $1053 r/t
Depart on March 24
Return on April 4, 5, 6, 7, 12, 13, 14, 15, 20, 21, 22, 25, 26, 27, 28 or May 2, 5, 6, 9, 10, 11, 12, 17, 18, 19, 20, 23, 24, 25, 26, 27, 30, 31

Thanks for this, cruser1. You have been a legend with these fares recently. I just happened to be in the market for a one way from South Africa to Europe and thought I would see if the one way works for this. It does, at least to MAD or BRU. I chose MAD and paid just under 500.

Fantastic! A one way that's around 50% of the roundtrip.

Unfortunately Egyptair has switched the promised 1-2-1 flatbeds for an A330 with 2-2-2 angled seats. I have managed to get one of the middle pair, but it's a disappointment. Still a very good fare, even for a sub-standard product.

Well, I managed to fly this fare successfully, but I really can't recommend Egyptair.

The food was actually reasonably decent, but the service was terribly lax. No drinks were served before the meal service and I ended up drinking water bought at the airport. I did request a soft drink (Egyptair is a dry airline) and a can of 7-Up finally appeared around the time I finished the main course. Then the crew disappeared, never to be seen again and I had to bring my own tray back to the galley.

The aircraft substitution was a massive downgrade and the hard product was just awful. The angled seat was virtually impossible to sleep on. Halfway through the flight from JNB I decided to sit up for a while and soon wished I hadn't. The seat refused to go back down and the crew faffed around for about half an hour trying to fix it, before moving me to an empty seat. In angled mode, the headrest dug into my shoulders, forcing me further down the seat. I managed about 2 and a half hours of very fitful sleep and woke up halfway down the seat with my legs tucked up.

The 5 hour flight to Madrid was mediocre. The hard product was US domestic first style recliners, which were reasonably comfortable even if they hadn't been updated for at least 30 years. Sleep was again impossible. The food was ordinary and the beef main was overcooked, tough and inedible.

I arrived in Madrid as exhausted as I would have been after a flight in economy and had muscle cramps for the next 3 days.

This was on the face of it an excellent fare and may well have given a better experience without the aircraft downgrade. But anyone flying Egyptair needs to seriously manage their expectations.

Thanks for the trip report. It's unfortunate that they swapped aircraft on you.

FWIW I've flown the MS A330 (incidentally, the one that had that in-flight engine issue back in the day), and found the angled flat seats to be pretty good (but then I always keep seats angled for sleeping, so old style not fully flat seats are my preference anyway).
Service sounds about right for MS - they bring you food. For everything else you go to the galley and ask. They are usually helpful as long as you are polite and don't interrupt their chat and leisure time too much
