There are three different threads discussing these on the AA forum...It's mostly buying stuff, especially gift cards.

You do need the JL (non-SYD) fare, else you will get HIP checked.

I was mostly kidding. The opportunity cost even at 2x is too high unless you're overvaluing AA miles. Most of the people who are doing it are doing it via the portal where a lot of grey area or darker plays are available. This is going a little off topic for this thread so I'll leave it at that.

There is no gray area, it is how the new AA system works, you get 3 LPs/RDMs per $1 on buying giftcards. Anyway, no more OT posting.

Nope - AA waives HIP check in some places - on this fare on AA fare HIP is waived in TYO - i just ticketed one such itinerary!

Weird - I get very inconsistent results pricing that on ITA. Sometimes it will do the HIP check, and other times not. Seems to want NRT-MH-KUL-MH-CGK and a AA:JL overwater leg to give the low price (which I assume you did not need to do). I assume part of this is ITA being weird.

How many legs can be on the *A ticket? 8 or 12 or 16?

this is what I have gotten so far, with inventory off

it avoids Japan/NH due to the bad crediting for me for the cheaper NH J fares:

3 transfers each direction in Area 3 and 3 transfers each direction in Area 1 (so up to 12 segments). None in China (including HKG), Indonesia, or Thailand.

You are restricted to the fare routing on *A though - once you get to SIN you can't go back to TYO, but I think -SFO-TYO-SIN-TPE-CGK could be legal.

I hadn't tried, to be honest. Had stumbled upon this thread well past my bedtime in the first place.

Now that I have tried, I've struck out, just like you.

Not that I'm surprised. It was a flight of fancy, pun accidental.

UGH! I had set aside some time tomorrow to finally try and book this, but that's what I get for snoozing I guess.
