ZIPAIR: LAX to NRT from USD 1629

Decent? sale with ZIPAIR from Los Angeles to Tokyo-Narita on an LCC with a Business class seat and that's it.
Everything else is optional, from seat selection, meals, luggage and even amenity kit. Also, it seems that there is NO IFE on the plane, but free? Wi-Fi...

We can hope that by October, Japan will open up and return to some normalcy when it comes to tourism.

Some extras for sale...

In the forums I searched for ZIPAIR, seems like no mention of LAX, there was a thread that I posted for BKK NRT last year... Apologies if I missed a link...

Didn't Japan already begin the reopening process for tourism?

As of NOW... a typical US citizen (using it as an example since this is an EX-LAX fare):
You need to apply for a visa and be on a packaged tour... There are still caps on daily entries...

In addition, (3) foreign nationals from countries/regions classified as having a low risk of COVID-19 inflow who are newly entering Japan for a short-term stay for tourism are allowed to enter starting on June 10, only when they are on escorted package tours with a travel agency or travel service provider as their receiving organization.

FYI - There are only certain flights you can take with zipair if you are not allowed entry in to Japan that allow you to transit without going through immigration (only posting the LAX-based flights): Regarding Transfers and Same-day Connection Services | ZIPAIR Official Website

For customers transferring via ZIPAIR to a different airline, all travelers must go through immigration upon arrival, pick up your checked baggage, and go through Customs inspection. You may be required to provide mandatory documents for entering the country of transit. If you cannot provide the documents, boarding may be refused. Please prepare all travel documents in advance.

Customers with same-day connections on select flights operated by ZIPAIR are not required to go through immigration and can transit through Narita airport. Applicable connections are listed below:

ZG23 (Los Angeles-Narita) → ZG51 (Narita-Bangkok)
ZG23 (Los Angeles-Narita) → ZG53 (Narita-Singapore)
Aside from those specific transfers, it's understood that you will be forced to go through immigration even if you're carryon only (I haven't seen any reports that say otherwise), and you will only get refunded a tiny amount (taxes - like $65) if you have to cancel. So buyer beware.

That said, this flight at times will be as low as $400ish each direction as they are a LCC. You can also find ANA and JL with $500 flights each direction to/from LAX and NRT/HND.

Based on the current state of Japan (non)reopening I would not be comfortable booking this even 1 year out.

Thanks for the find. I was just watching a trip report about this today and reading about it. The cautionary tale about above is true. A couple got sent back to LAX from Japan because they had no visa. Since Zipair (even though owned by JAL) has no arrangement with any other airlines to connect, you can't use sterile transit.

But an interesting concept. I'd fly it at that price.

are you talking about economy fares? I don’t ever remember seeing ANA or JL at 500 in J?

it's all about the seat

I'd take a <$1700 lie flat seat with none of the extras all day long. Pity this option isn't available on most carriers for those of us who couldn't care less about booze, amenity kits, and terrible food.

I looked into Zipair a bit but from what I can tell, they don't offer ticket changes at all. So if you purchase this fare and Japan doesn't open up by October, you're SOL.

Isn't Japan open for a limited number of tourists already? If the country doesnt open up fully by October, you should still be able to go by joining a tour group.

Tour group will likely need to arrive on a specific day and specific schedule. You will also need to apply for a visa, get several covid tests and group schedule needs to be set exactly ahead of time. I doubt that they can conform this schedule to your arbitrarily selected flights - famous Japanese flexibility and all.
