I couldn't agree more. I've flown intra-Europe business class on several airlines and for flights below 2 hours or so it is OK. But when flights get to 4 hours (or more), it is ridiculous. One of the reason I liked this fare is you can get MS for the flights form Europe to Egypt. While MS flights are potentially alcohol free, you will get a seat that is as least as good as a US domestic first class seat. The only other airline I like for booking short haul business in/around Europe for the same reason in TK.

Also, MS is not a European airline so CAI-Europe flights are not protected by EC261.

Also they might be a dry airline-- and I think I would need a drink after a short connection/turn in CAI!

Another good option would Air Canada from Montreal to Cairo non-stop. However, I am not sure if the fare is applicable on that route.

It operates form June 28 to October 6 and the fares are at least double the fares for connecting with the LH group in Germany.

And an update to those flights. I found that the MS flight from FRA to CAI operates a 789 four days a week. So you could fly a 74H from ORD to FRA, connecting to a 789 from FRA to CAI. 100% lie flat seats. A tad more expensive (like $30 or $40 more per passengers) but still under $2200.

Looks like still available from SFO at +/- $2,350 - $2,400 on various dates from now through next February. I'm only looking for 3- or 4-day turns for a mileage/status run but very attractive. Including UA, LX, LH and AC metal with some 1-stop connections available.

Been looking at this fare for a few weeks, discussing with the wife, and finally we went ahead and booked it for our kids' spring break next year, availability is pretty wide-open on this and the ability to do a stopover each way is what really sealed the deal for us.

ORD-MUC(LH)
2 nights in Munich
MUC-FRA-CAI(LH)
2 nights in Cairo
CAI-ZRH(LX)
3 nights in Zurich
ZRH-ORD(UA)

$2,253.75 per ticket booked through United with no compromises on the dates is pretty hard to beat.

Ramadan is March 22- April 21, for those considering travel to Egypt. I've read mixed things about tourism during this period, but enough to make me reconsider spring break, as I had initially planned...

I really appreciate the heads up on that, our flight back to ZRH is on March 22, so we were only planning on doing touristy stuff on March 21 anyway (go see the Giza pyramids and Sphinx and maybe a little cruise on the Nile), so hopefully we'll be okay, hopefully the hotel will be able to arrange a ride to the airport at least on the first day of Ramadan.

Can you elaborate on this? Is the free stopover limited to selected European cities and airlines, and can it be for a week or two? And does it work ex-SFO?

Here are the fare rules. After reviewing the Stopover restrictions, I'd recommend that you use the multi-city search feature of the airline's booking site to make sure you can get the trip with the stopovers you like booked.

The restrictions for stopovers (at least for LH) are as follows

Yup, the free stopover each way is the beauty of this fare. For us the kids get to go to three countries they've never visited (and Egypt is new for us parents), spend enough time where they won't get (too) bored with them, but will at least get a taste of each of them.

I know some people aren't afraid of adding more flights for mileage earning or just the fun of more flying, but traveling with a couple of pre-teens we have no desire to drag it out, so the ability to do ORD-MUC-CAI-ZRH-ORD in just five flights (MUC-CAI being the one sector we ended up needing to connect for) and spending 2/3 nights in each MUC, CAI, and ZRH was key to the attractiveness of this fare for us, that and being from an airport that we can drive to in a single day (ORD) and not needing to arrange yet more flights for. My National award rental car days will come in handy for this, will just rent a car one way each way, no mileage on my own car and no parking to mess with and pay for in Chicago.

Thank you for the above. I will use the multi-city search feature to see what I can get. I was hoping to stopover at CDG (or some other french city such as NCE or MRS), but that apparently won't work, unless AF is part of this sale, I guess.
