Stumbled across this fare from AM in March next year for little over $2800. Perhaps other dates are also available. Good MR for those crediting to Delta.

Any idea why AM flies the much better/newer 787-9s on the shorter JFK-MEX leg, but the 787-8s on the longer MEX-NRT/ICN leg?

JFK <-> MEX is premium route for AM.

I was about to say the shorter 787-8 should have a longer operational range, but upon double check, it was wrong: the 787-9 OR is very slightly larger (7,635 nautical miles vs 7,355)

A flight between MEX-ICN is merely 800 miles short of the maximum range for the 788.
