I could find heavily reduced J fares on AMEX from ARN - AKL booking for 2.659 € (earns 200% on M&M). ITA Matrix Shows this fare for 3.386 € (nice 700 € saving)

Backtracking and change of planes, potential for IRROPS, or shenanigans with luggage, vs a direct flight with a 1h10min stop enroute?? ... unless I needed the differential miles/segments, I’d choose the the direct ARN-DME-SIN every time.
