You'd come out ahead, both in cash and Avios, taking an UL economy flight out to AUH and booking AUH-CGK in J.
Up to 140 TPs for the economy flights under 500 GBP, and 560 from the business class for 500 GBP. So 700 TPs under 1000 quid. If you have the time, looks like a winner.

CGK-CMB-CGK is currently GBP 475 for 280 TPs in BAEC, so it works out to GBP 1.70 per TP. For folks that are based in Asia and need to build up TPs, isn't it a better option to just fly CGK-CMB return (repeatedly) instead of CGK-CMB-AUH return?

If Asia based MH usually offer the best earning capacity - especially out of Taipei, Taiwan via KUL. But even CX TPE-DPS can often be well below £2 per TP.

Also see the India - Australia thread for MH DEL - PER via KUL and SYD.

You'd still be better off making your way to AUH using miles or whatever and then booking in the easterly direction.
