A travel agent can get them for you, without the hotel stay requirement. Price should be at or less than published fares...

If anyone's still waiting on/ticketed with/booking this kind of fare in the future, just a data point that LAX-DFW-HKG my comp upgrade cleared like normal at T-100, and my SUW cleared this morning for the long haul. I'll report back if I have any issues with it posting as a special fare once the flying's done.
