NZ J RT $2692 LAX-RAR (Rarotonga)

I will admit to having had no idea where or what Rarotonga was before it popped up on Google flights.

I'm not sure how good of a deal this actually is (mods, feel free to delete if it's no good), but it's about $1-2k cheaper than the cheapest business class flights to nearby islands (on a good product, no less) and about $1200 cheaper than UA J to the same island. Maybe more of a (reasonably) cheap tropical vacation than a mileage run. Tempting...'

Edit: Argh, I meant J, of course (not Y). I'll flag and ask mods to change title

Went last year when NZ ran a sale; however, we got J class for $1800 RT. So, the current may not be the greatest deal. Still a reasonable option for those who want J though. BTW, the Cook Islands were beautiful and relaxing.

Thanks! I'll keep an eye out. That's a great deal.

We went about 5 years ago. Interesting place.

The waters off of Aitutaki are incredible, but there is very, very little to do on the main island (Rarotonga) or Aitutaki. We got a bit bored.

I didn't really play with dates but this showed up in the map search from SFO & LAX:

I'm not sure if there are better dates, or what the availability window is

It's not a great deal. NZ had this on sale in the $1750 - $1800 range in the recent past. I was looking to spend a few days on the beach and then to fly to New Zealand. A relatively cheap way of flying J almost all the way to New Zealand.

You have to search outbound from LAX on a Saturday and return on a Friday. NZ only operates one direct flight per week.

They use a 777-200 on this route which has lie flat beds in J.

Now that the 767's have gone all NZ's longhaul fleet (777-200, 777-300 and 787) have lie flat beds.

It has been the lie flat for sometime now. The flight is only once a week, so you are kinda stuck.

Internet is slow and expensive satellite based so you probably want to consider an unlocked phone and local SIM, though they are supposed to be getting a cable in from Fiji that will substantially improve this. My wife and I went on that last deal and thought it was pretty nice, but a bit boring and internet speed is important to us. We spent a day in Aitutaki, which was also nice but even more isolated than Raro.
