I'm pretty torn between the $2400 from YUL-LGA-JFK-DOH-BKK and then getting off at JFK on the way back in April or the $3800 DFW-DOH-JNB round trip. I live in DFW so I dunno.

I just reread the T&C of Amex's IAP and don't recall seeing this before: "Travel must originate in and return to U.S. gateway (may exclude certain overseas territories) and select Canadian gateways." Surely Montreal must be a "select gateway". If anybody has a Platinum card and wants to price check an itinerary and report back for us...

Not seeing anything from any US gateways, but plenty from YUL.

If routed via US gateway can we earn Advantage miles? I know flying direct from Canada won't work:

"Earn and redeem AAdvantage® miles for travel on Qatar within the Middle East and between the Middle East and:
  • Africa
  • Asia
  • Europe
  • South America
  • South Pacific
  • U.S."
The AA website mentions the US specifically for some of the other Partner Airlines.

This is 100% incorrect and seems to come up every so often on the MR forums with folks who are unfamiliar with AA. There are no restrictions with earning AA miles on QR flights that originate in Canada.

The aa.com section you are quoting is only meant as a rough guide of where each partner carrier flies their own metal, it is not a hard and fast list of what flights will or won't earn miles. Any flights that are excluded from AA mileage earning will be specifically called out under an "Exceptions" section on the same page.

QR isn't just a partner, but a OW member. This seems a misprint. Anyone have experience crediting YUL-DOH to AA?

I think there was confusion on some of the fares other than the OPs. The prices quoted (e.g., ORD origin) were for one way, not roundtrip.

I was under the distinct impression that one could not earn AA miles on Qatar since Canada is omitted from the list of countries, while Canada is listed for Cathay and British. (Finnair also omits Canada FWIW) Called EXP desk, who escalated to service desk, and AA Customer Service who escalated to supervisor, and both said that as far as they are concerned one cannot earn mileage, as per the website. Has anyone flown from Canada with QR and earned AA miles?

What if we have a stop over in the US (like most of us are doing) then we do Canada - US on Air Canada, THEN US to Doh to Asia on Qatar.

JJeffrey's reply is correct above.

This makes sense. I think the issue is that QR only has the single destination in Canada and the copy writers for the AA website didn't catch that .

Again, this is 100% incorrect, most reservations agents and even EXP agents and supervisors will have zero clue about the in's and out's of AA earning on partners and such, all they are doing is just reading aa.com at the same time (probably for the first time) and trying to make an on-the-fly call.

If there were any QR flights that were specifically excluded from AA earning, they would be listed under an "Exceptions" area on the same page at aa.com. For example, if you click on the LATAM or Finnair pages at aa.com, you will the "Exceptions" area that specifically calls out flights to/from Cuba as being ineligible for mileage accrual. These aa.com pages have been set up this way for years.
