Played with this a bit, seems you can route pretty liberally such as PEK-HKG-NRT-LAX-CLT-BOS-DFW-PEK for around $1500. I wasn't able to easily get HKG on both the outbound and inbound.
Curiously, I can't seem to price this with connections on ITA. Works on Google Flights though.

I dunno... Looking at aa.com at departures in mid to late March and returns in April, the $1300 seems to be widely available. The fare has some very specific date limitations, but I am not having a problem seeing availability.

I had been looking for something outbound around the last week of March, and return the second week of April. When I search a regular round trip on aa.com with dates of March 27 - April 9, the aa.com display shows results for the date requested as well as a few days on either side. Looking now for the outbound flight, I see a fare of $1299 available for the outbound on March 25, 26, 27, and 28. For the return, I see April 8, 9, and 10.

Couldn't get the Chinese site to give me anything better at any better price, so settled for 3/28 PEK-LAX return 4/25 LAX-HKG-PEK for $1417 each. Thanks, as this is just a few hundred more than the PE deals AA from HKG and SQ from BKK.

Nice to see this one is back, for some dates up to next March/April. The original fare expired on Oct 20, and I noticed a higher price
in the days following that, but it seems to have returned.
