Actually a vaccination is needed - and for most travelers this should be standard.

Per a previous thread in the LATAM forum
https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/lata...a-jnb-gru.html
the difference in flight times is very real (stricter ETOPS rules for TAM's 767 cause a longer, indirect routing).

Yellow Fever Vaccination

I'm interested in starting this trip from GRU, because the cost of positioning from YVR is cheaper.
Timatic says:
Required Vaccinations
There is no risk of yellow fever in South Africa. The government of South Africa requires proof of yellow fever vaccination from
travellers 1 year of age or older who are arriving from a country with risk of yellow fever, including transit in an airport located in a country with risk of yellow fever. For further information on this recommendation, please visit the CDC Yellow Fever Advice.

CDC page, table 3-26 doesn't include Brazil nor S. Africa. I'm confused.

The "further information" comment was probably intended for N.American travelers. The government of South Africa will require and do whatever they want, and will not be taking orders from the CDC.

Just did this trip a few weeks ago but started in MIA, trust me when I say you 100% need the Yellow fever vaccination. I was in transit and boarded without issue, they had officials meet the aircraft and verified EVERY PERSONS vaccination certificate for yellow fever.

The CDC is a US Government agency. It has no standing anywhere else in the world.

Trying to cite CDC regulations to South African Port Health authorities is a sure-fire way to either be deported or forcibly vaccinated. They have a particularly low tolerance for the CDC.

You'll probably be sent back on that aircraft, but the interim period will likely be spent in the immigration detention cells if they want to be difficult about things.

These have supposedly improved in recent years, but I can quite honestly say that the cells at OR Tambo used to be (~10 years ago) the most horrendous detention areas I have ever seen (and I've been held at or visited detention facilities in 20+ countries around the world including a bunch in less salubrious parts of Africa).

Why would you not get it?

Surely its better to be vaccinated against it rather than save what £60?

Some countries will also on finding out you have been in Brazil etc expect you to have a cert to get into their countries too
