YYZ-JFK-HEL-NGO $1600 OW J FinnAir

The good, you can get 2 long haul segments on Finn Air international business class. The bad, you must start in Toronto and fly American Eagle to JFK. Also flight ends in NGO, which has much less flight connections than Tokyo or Osaka. And the ugly, there is an 8 hour layover in Helsinki- not enough to day trip into the city and too long to enjoy the airport lounge sauna offering.

Yes, but allows for one way routing. Good if you need to reposition to Japan.

Eight hours is definitely enough time to venture into Helsinki from the airport and even to go on a tour of Suomenlinna. The Hilton attached to the airport also likely has day rooms.

Thank you for the great find! NGO is not as convenient, but I heard that the airport is nicer than NRT.

Questions:

1. Does this allow a stopover at HEL?
2. What is the maximum length of stay?

Part of AY strategy is to connect European cities to second-tier Asian cities that don't have direct service from LHR, FRA, AMS etc. Helsinki is located north enough to be pretty close to the great circle route from Western Europe to China and Japan, which means that it is generally the fastest one-stop option from Europe to Northeast Asia. Finnair also serves destinations like Fukuoka, Nanjing and Chongqing from HEL.

Yes. I've been able to book two stopovers in HEL for as long as 3 days without additional charges. But you have to use OTA since Finnair booking engine does not allow double stopovers.

Also, you don't have to go through JFK since you can also book AY coded flights from YYZ on BA via LHR. BTW it doesn't have to NGO; AY has good biz class fares from North America to Asia--if you can put up with long layovers (up to 20 hours on the return segment).

Finnair is the biggest European airline in Japan (right?), so I wouldn't call it that odd

I think LH is the largest European airline to Japan, they have 4 flights: FRA/MUC-HND, FRA-KIX, FRA-NGO (non-daily). Up to ~1,300 seats/day.
AY has 3 flights: HEL-NRT, and HEL-KIX/NGO (non-daily). Up to ~900 seats/day.
