Was able to find DL on the return - IAH-DTW-AMS-MAD (last segment operated by KL)
instead of all KL IAH-AMS-MAD
Thoughts on which to keep? The DL metal revised itinerary saves another 70 Euros (so 910 Euros!)

Also FYI - can return from many cities but be prepared to pay a little bit more.
E.g. can do return HNL-LAX-JFK-MAD (as long as inbound is into IAH). Adds about $350 USD to the fare (HNL is the furthest option it allows). Other west coast cities (e.g. LAX or SEA) for return origination point about $250 more.

That is what I did to book MAD-BCN-CDG-IAH-SLC-CDG-MAD with one night at CDG on the inbound and one night in SLC on the outbound, all for 980€.
